I really disagree. A proof is a proof, doesn't matter if it helps you understand anything or not.

Perhaps the idea is that OP was actually fishing for compliments. She said she doesn't want to evoke unwanted attention because she is too good looking, but by writing that she notified the internet of being very good looking.

In some industries you might not have a significant enough number of women to create a significant statistic.

But what is the solution? Why should companies be responsible to pay for that risk? I think if society doesn't want women to be disadvantaged because of the "risk" of becoming family persons, then society should pay up, not c

As I said, it's not only the parental leave that is an issue. Often later on one parent decides to only work part time. Usually it is the mother.

That assumes that every sexual harassment lawsuit has merit.

I've heard that companies like men with wives and kids, because wives will drive them to work harder. Can't afford to lose your job if you have to support a family either.

What happens is that women usually get to do the reduced time because they have a higher claim to their kids. It is not only the paternity leave, but also for example working part time later on. Dads don't get the option to do part tim

"she's assumed to get pregnant and go on maternity leave" Would you say that assumptions is completely unfounded? What percentage of women don't have kids?

"no women, no sexual harassment suits" Why is it bigot to think that? Seems like a valid concern, can't really blame companies for worrying about that? It's of course a problem, but what is the proper solution?

When I read it 16 years ago, I went to the length of actually looking up some of the twin studies. My impression is that they are not as compelling as it sounds. For example one study had 40 individuals, but they were not a homogenic group.

Doesn't genetic testing allow you to determine where your ancestors came from to an astonishing degree? I'm pretty sure there are lots of valid ways to define a race. The question is how useful it is. Also in the past a lot of peo

I was thinking mostly about the remote vs local aspect. You are right that speculating on your motivation seems misguided. Although perhaps it's also not totally far fetched to assume that somebody with a family would want to spend som

You are rephrasing what I said in the wrong way. I didn't make a comment on the status quo, just on the notion that everybody has to work 40 hours.

Well I read it because I wanted to know if it was really racist or not. Unfortunately that was 16 years ago, so I am not 100% sure of my conclusion anymore. But I think ultimately I didn't think it was racist. I seem to remember they e

The statement "people need to work 40 hours" is already obviously false. There are lots of people who don't need to work, because they already have more money than they could ever spend.

This illustrates very well why you shouldn't become a slave to the money. Earning more money won't make you happier. Spending more time with your kid might.

Assuming that having a clue about legal responsibilities of hiring supervisors is the most important skill of a boss :-) I think it is good if somebody is honest. And his reasoning actually seems sound.

Why not, though? Assuming a democratic government represents the interests of it's voters, apparently a significant fraction (ok, at least one) of the population would be interested in paid 4 month vacations.

Granted, I wasn't even thinking about the paid paternity leave. Obviously if the state pays for it, the thought "how much am I willing to pay my babysitter" is not a factor. It's actually fascinating that despite full pa

I found it very ironic when I tried to read GTD that it actually has a very cluttered layout. Every page was littered with little side boxes explaining something. I found those so distracting that I was unable to focus on the main text. So

Are nuclear power plants still being built at the same rate as wind turbines? Or are they mostly old ones sitting around? I suspect the latter, in which case the "accidents in construction" comparison doesn't make much sense

While I think it's cool to do this and I am a bit envious, I would still like to add the recommendation to not dismiss money so quickly. I have some friends who think like that and it concerns me a bit. The thing is, you are not taking

How is wind power dangerous to people? Because the production of wind wheels pollutes the environment? Or it diverts thunderstorms? Maybe people die in the construction of the turbines? But then, wouldn't people die in mining Plutonium

What kind of jobs do you have in mind? I have taken to saying "Everybody should have the right to a job as 'Verwaltungsfachangestellter'" (something like an office clerk). But I tend to say that in jest...
