I don't think this is quite what the author was getting at. It's kind of a separate issue. Obviously all code is written for some end-user in the end, but this piece was about how the code is written, not what it does. When he says "who are

Can you try not using double negatives like "does not involve ... activities outside first-hand knowledge"? It's really hard to read, especially since I'm tired.

This might sound like a cop-out response, but I'm reading Switch by ChipDan Heath and I think it'd help you out. It's a new perspective on getting change to stick. One idea I really liked is "focusing on the bright spots" - figuring out wha

Why not pay the $20 or whatever fee for Yahoo Gold and have it forward for you? Then you can switch to a different service, Gmail if you wanted. You'd probably be a lot happier in the long run if managing your email is a pain right now. And

Don't know if this is the best place to bring it up, but I don't think "bacn" is a good word for low-priority email. There are a lot of passionate email users who are even more passionate about bacon. There could even be a backlash.

As others have alluded to, it's hacker in the sense of someone skilled at programming, not someone who hacks into systems to screw things up. It's a definition of the word that the public isn't really familiar with.
