People have two layers. Behavioural psychology tends to pretend that the deeper layer; the one that comes out when you're depressed and shatters all your illusions; doesn't exist. People know. They just block it out and invent rea

I thought this was going to be an article about setjmp() and longjmp(), which can be used to implement this kind of mechanism.

It's funny that this even needs to be a blog post. I can see why simple key-value stores have become so popular in recent years. Developers don't want to learn SQL properly, and end up using the database as if it were a key-value

This is a very American sort of story. The long hours, the lousy paychecks, the lack of universal healthcare, the reliance on fast food. It's possible to not live like that, but America doesn't want to.

I had to stop reading when he claimed that the BSD heritage of macOS is only of academic interest. The guy has clearly never tried to use macOS.

Last Apollo mission was in 1972, so only 5 years after. I honestly didn't check the date of the last Apollo mission but I knew it was in the 1970s. Point is, both UNIX and VMS are ancient, and it doesn't matter, which was my entir

Right, but that's the output end of it. What about the input end? Developers are also users of libraries and frameworks. My question is perhaps more about why poorly documented frameworks end up in production systems than why people do

The UNIX heritage of macOS may be from the Apollo era, but so is the UNIX heritage of Linux, an operating system that pretty much powers the infrastructure of the Internet. Using macOS isn't so different from using something like Ubunt

This is exactly the sort of thing you'd say to make people who don't believe in the myth try to smoke banana peels anyway. "It worked that one time, oh, what a mystery, we must find the secret..."

When I said legit newsletters, I meant the sort you get from sites you've already signed up for. Newsletters that arrive out of the blue are not legit and you should of course never interact with those, but that's self-evident f

Apple had a good run. I'm in a twist. I don't like Windows or Android and Linux just isn't there on the desktop. I made the switch from Windows/Android around 2012-2014 and it was a relief. Now I hate all their new hardw

I don't see how this is different from what the United States federal government attempted with the Metric system back in the 1970s. Granted, the effort failed, but more due to cultural inertia than due to any resistance from the state

If we draw an analogy to stagecraft and "Ann Anchor" is a character from a popular play, it isn't unreasonable to expect a performer to dress up for a role. Actors sometimes go as far as losing or gaining weight or muscle mas
