I have one sore spot about Rust: The Rust build tools are almost unusably slow on small ARM devices like the Raspberry Pi Zero. I can compile a simple C++ program just fine on such a device, but Rust will take ages building dependencies and

As a person who never had a degree but whose knowledge goes above and beyond what 90% of the market needs and well into CS territory, this article insults me. It's also a painful reminder of similar prejudices in people who are looking

Google is kind of showing signs of becoming more like AltaVista towards the end of its life. It's not quite as bad yet, but I feel increasingly frustrated when I'm searching for things, and that wasn't the case 5-7 years ago.

Uh, very obviously a cooling limitation. You only do thermal throttling if the CPU would otherwise overheat. What would they fix in firmware, exactly? It's not like you can permit the CPU to overheat, and it's not like you can run

When I was designing a microservices architecture for a former employee, the justification for it was security. We needed separation of the components in the system because we were going to be handling money. It used ZeroMQ for communicatio

My story is that Windows was getting on my nerves and Linux didn't have the creative software that I wanted, so I sought refuge in macOS, which turned out to be better for programming and content creation than anything I had ever used

In the advertising industry, this is called a lifestyle brand. I suspect that the earliest lifestyle brands were luxury watches and cars, not Pepsi.

I tried in vain to find WebAssembly. Why would you include JavaScript but not WebAssembly in a graph that has LLVM in it?

Still waiting for direct DOM/HTML5 API access. Then you could use any language that compiles to WASM as a front-end language. Until then, WASM is of limited interest to me. EDIT: I mean, why wouldn't that be one of the first items

Reassigning the event handler? That doesn't count. What if that was a WebSocket connection? Would you keep removing and adding event handlers? What if the JS engine decided to invoke the 'message' event handler 3 times in a r

Now, on top of that, add the ability to run map(), reduxe() and filter() on a series of events. Instead of having to wait for all the elements in an array to be available, you can process it as you're receiving it, yet treat it as an a

Suppose the events in question are network messages arriving via DOM callback. You call getNextEvent() and then what? You're not inside the event callback, so there's no event to hand back. You could push events onto an array as t

This is more or less what RxJS calls an Observable (except with nicer syntax). Here's a very nice table that makes the lack of this feature in ESnext seem like a strange omission: https://danreynolds.ca/images/tech

The tendency to promote people out of engineering and into management is probably down to the bottom line. At some point, an engineer's economic worth plateaus, and the only way to justify a bigger paycheck is to have him offload the u

My takeaway from witnessing countless arguments about Nietzsche: Nietzsche wasn't very good at expressing what he meant. If he were, there wouldn't be so much arguing about how to interpret his works.

It's tempting to view this as being about trends, but there's a maturity element as well. Young people tend to want to try different things. They also haven't experienced much hardship or given much thought to (life after) de

I'd argue that Melodyne is pretty advanced. I mean, it can take a polyphonic (multi-voice) audio track and separate the notes so you can manipulate them almost like a MIDI track. That's pretty damned difficult for a computer to pu
