Part of the problem is the blurring of the line between mathematics with arithmetic. I sincerely don’t care if your average person can’t master calculus but I do care that people can’t split a check and work out the gratuity in their head.

My father briefly worked in the U.K. in the 80’s and claims that British nurses would say ‘you’ll feel a small prick’ just as they were about to insert the needle. I’m not sure if it’s true but it has always made me chuckle.
