I am acquainted with a number of people who in childhood came south with their parents. These families were not making a political statement; they simply did not wish to be murdered.

This is news to me too. Now that my kids are older, last year I decided to clear some space in what had been their playroom by finding a new home for the small mountain of Lego that we had accumulated. I rang around local schools and charit

To this native speaker, the intended meaning was immediately obvious, but I agree, it is awkwardly phrased. Something like "inadequate staffing levels" would be much better.

You should have left out the first sentence! Someone once sent me a link to a tooth-grindingly annoying performance by an English "comedian", where he expressed irritation and disbelief at what he saw as a preposterous disconnect

[Sorry, this was supposed to be a response to the link to "They're Made out of Meat"...] This is great! I had somehow never encountered it before. It reminds me in tone of "D.R. and Quinch Have Fun On Earth", an ana

What's your point? That mental health initiatives are only worth discussing if they originate in working class communities? Also, I grew up in the vicinity of Greystones and painting it as a kind of Irish Beverly Hills is daft. Everyon

Hard disagree on that. The image of aligning your toes with a starting line is what makes sense. By contrast, while you may use a line to pull something behind you, it's never the line itself that you're towing.

I also always think of a very important point that I saw concisely expressed in an interview with Daniel Miller, about fifteen years ago. (If you don't recognise the name, Miller founded Mute Records and signed Depeche Mode, and is an

Okay, fair enough. But presumably the WhatsApp groups are set up on an ad hoc basis by groups of staff - they're not being directed to use it by the HSE?

With respect, that comparison fails, because a $1,500 guitar will be noticeably more playable and have a substantially better sound than a $500 guitar. (Source: have played guitar for 35 years.) The point people are making here is that ever

Thank you! Interesting reading and not a good look for the DPC in question. That said, your use of the term "corrupt" implies that she has personally profited from the draft decision, and to be fair, I don't see any suggestio

Should the title not read, "BBC marks centenary of its first radio broadcast"? Other entities had been broadcasting for many years before the BBC's services began.

I think the advantage of the "pretty" words is that they can , in fact, convey additional meaning. It seems to me that people in general used to be have a far richer vocabular at their disposal. This allowed for fantastic nuance

"Sean" (properly, Seán) is actually an Irish Gaelic name. Irish, like English, features very many non-phonetic spellings. If the guy deliberately made you feel embarrassed for mispronouncing his name, he was just being a dick.
