I'll take it a step back to the PowerMac G3, not for any technical reason but just for the look of the damn things. Those candy Macs were beautiful and colour choices abundant. I really wish the anodized colours from the iPod Nano line

Honestly my vote is to bring back the Beefy Miracle. Let the mustard once again indicate progress! (The Plymouth splash for Beefy Miracle had a friendly hotdog with arms waving at you while a mustard squiggle filled itself in up it’s body.

You reminded me of a post JWZ made a while back with a TV in his bar. It's neat how these things can be embedded into our collective experince. (Copy and paste the link, referrer shenanigans.) https://www.jwz.org/blog&#

Another issue with COBOL (Apart from being unsexy and verbose) is simply getting access to a proper mainframe environment. You could pick up COBBOL using something like GNU Cobol or similar but it's working in the z/OS environment

Exactly! My arms rest perfectly on the arm rests and my spine is thanking me for it! If you want a prebuilt there's the ErgoDox EZ but that takes half the fun out of it :) Take the dive, be the guy that built his own damn keyboard!

Ergonomics was a large factor in building my own ErgoDox, my shoulders were killing me due to the keyboard being too short to be supported by the rests on my chair. Choosing to build your own keyboard is it's own little rabbit hole to

Really? That's pretty handy actually. A long time ago I ran an experiment where I kept my dotfiles remotely and union mounted them to the right places. The real issue was getting it set up on temporary usage boxes and managing the diff

I actually had to use one of those the other day! I needed to check a guest into a hotel while the city municipality was working on the power so we were on emergency lights and no connectivity. Took a second, but that sound is just so satis

Fascinating to see Vorticism spring up here of all places, even among most of the artists I interact with it's a minor footnote if even known at all. But Vorticism holds a special place in my heart with it's call to action simply

This is literally the video I ripped my first JCL from in my post above. I believe the relevant section is around 4:30 :)

It does, In a similar vein Cobol has the ACCEPT DATE (YYMMDD) and ACCEPT DAY (YYDDD) constructs for retrieving the date. There's an optional argument for supporting four digit year codes however. Julian dates pop up in some wonky place

My introduction to z/OS mirrors the posters. A week of trying to google random keywords, copy JCL, waffle about the system trying to get anything done. Eventually copied out some JCL from a frame of a paused youtube video, and another

I've managed to make do with VSCode, sshfs, reading the iconv manpage and using the USS Submit command for job cards. The current workflow has SDSF open in c3270 to the left and VSCode loaded with Cobol extensions to the right. Saving,

Yeah that's pretty similar to what current/last gen hearing aids can do. My mother has been dependent on her pair since she was 7, but a few years ago she upgraded to a newer version. The hearing aid has a few different modes for

I knew about 80 just being a standard but put into the context of punch cards it just makes sense. Same thing with cobol, max line length is 80, first seven are stripped from compile, comments start on line 7. Who thought 72 char lines were

Fucking rights bud, I know a few greybeards down with the city so reaching out would be a great idea. There's not much talent or tech here so It wouldn't surprise me to find an old mainframe running parts of the show. As far as gi

The other thing I'm taking into account here is demand though, there aren't many people willing to work in such an environment with established and unsexy tech. And with the amount of brain drain to the US from Canadian institutio

I've been using the MTM System, and while slow I believe they're keeping the lights on all year as opposed to only when the contest is running. If they shut her down, I'll have to pick this up as a learning system.
