I see "bicycle work" and "real-time work" as basically the same thing. In other words, you do "bicycle work" so that you can do "real-time work" successfully later. In programming terms, this would be like taking the time to learn your lan

Chrome supports profiles through the UI now, check out the settings page (under the "Users" category). It makes switching between them (and knowing who you're using) easier by adding a user icon/switcher to the top-left of the window.

Is that the workaround? After viewing google on https, close the tab and start a new one for searching? Or should I always avoid http://google.com while logged into a google property on untrusted networks?

I think the only viable way to do this would be for Apple to make Macs obsolete. Like boiling a frog, if they upscaled the ipad to a desktop-lite device over the next few years, and eventually replaced their fully featured cousins with the

Gamers are (I think) attracted to Steam because of it's convenience and price. Many gamers will pass up games on alternative dd platforms because they can't get the game to register on steam. If Microsoft provides competitive pricing, fast

Steam is already competing with very strong entrants (Amazon, Gamestop/Impulse, Gamersgate), and seems to be doing well. Microsoft hasn't exactly hit the ball out of the park with Xbox Games-on-Demand, I'm not sure how much they really hav

I've done this too, scraping a doctor's site with flu shot information back when we had a flu scare a few years ago - my wife was worried about missing the notification for our daughter, so I whipped up something to ping me when more shots

Yes, I always keep it facing inward to protect it should I do something like walk into table corner. It's a bit of an annoyance, but thankfully is pretty temporary. I've gotten close to missing calls before, but haven't actually missed one

Interesting - I have an iPhone 4S, and I've noticed that if it's in my pocket, the touchscreen is really unresponsive. I get a call, pull my phone out, and it takes several tries for the "swipe to answer" gesture to succeed (usually the iP

Experienced well-rounded employees can mostly take care of themselves (and know when to say "no"). It's the new-hires and rough-around-the-edges people that require more hand holding and can benefit more greatly from a manager.

Nice to see a sync solution that lets me sync arbitrary folders. I was thinking of building a layer on top of dropbox for myself, but this works great. Thanks for the recommendation!

Making Outlook use Word as the default rendering engine was a pretty huge effort back in Office 2007. There was some underlying work that happened in this time frame that also led to Word Services in Office 2010. The reason why Office made

I use Outlook every day too, but don't really bother with the task tools that are built into it (even if it might (might!) integrate better with my email). It's too general-purpose. It's like giving me a full toolbox, and the only limit is
