This is all true, but the thing to note is that actual bad-faith participants are not so common. What is common is people perceiving bad faith where there is none; I'm trying to give them a way to handle that without turning conve

The way to handle argumentation that you suspect of bad faith is to handle both cases. You say "If you mean ... then ... but if you mean ... then ...". This doesn't apply to everything. But it certainly applies to just-askin

Oh, that makes a lot of sense! Ozy and Millie always reminded me heavily of Calvin and Hobbes. Hadn't heard of Phoebe and Her Unicorn before; may have to check it out.

That's not exactly right... in Haskell, 1/0 has type Fractional a => a. So, it could be any fractional type. If 1/0 occurs in a context where it'll be interpreted as a floating-point number, you'll get Infinity

Man, I just hope someone can somehow bring back Kongai (and fix the remaining bugs). That game was amazing; it was just a poor fit for what it was used for. (A difficult competitive game used as a sitewide metagame on a site full of quick

Something seems to be wrong with the footnotes on this page... Edit: Nevermind, my browser seems to just be screwing up on Gwern's footnotes in general at the moment.

Seems to me the issue of overflows corrupting return addresses could be avoided if the stack just grew upwards instead of downwards. Wouldn't prevent data corruption from overflows, but then neither would what you're suggesting..

Sure! The military shouldn't be police, and the police shouldn't be military. My point is just they suffice to demonstrate that it is possible to be a violence worker, and yet employ that violence with discretion; and to say t

I find this silly. It acts as if people are incapable of assessing situations and then selecting the best action based on that situation. Yes, police have the authority to use violence; that doesn't necessarily mean they have to have

Note: There was an MS-DOS 8.0; it did not come with Windows 98, but rather with Windows Me. I guess we'll probably never see this updated to include that, though!

I don't think this has anything to do with childhood. It's just a matter of illustrating the shape. Fundamentally, most people don't so much draw things as crudely diagram them.

What's a little confusing here is that they talk about "static allocation" vs "dynamic allocation"; but these days, use of the stack is referred to as static allocation! Even if it's not as fully static as t

Agree in general, but don't like the underline/italic thing. Most word processors have underline as separate from underline. Hence the alternative old email/Usenet convention: underscores for underline, slashes for italic.
