If it weren't so funny I'd almost feel bad for Cuil. Although it's a little disingenuous, because Cuil's pitch was that their display of results was radically different. That and that they indexed a lot.

Wikileaks publishes memos, reports, that sort of concrete evidence. I don't think they would officially publish their first hand reports without first trying to get some kind of confirmation through a leaked government file on them, for exa

I'll do that. I've contributed to some small projects, but I was psyching myself out from working on big open source projects. There are probably all sorts of bugs that would be tedious for the experienced coders to fix, so that's probably

Thanks, that's encouraging to hear. There's a group of people who give me advice that make it sound like all companies care about is GPA and the likes. My response was skepticism, because there have to be people who have the experience to e

I took 1901 with Dovolis and that was well worth my while. I'd done Lispey things before, so I was initially skeptical, but that course started a love affair with functional languages.

Thanks for the tips. I've been preparing cover letters so I'm glad to hear confirmation that it's a good idea.

Yeah, we did a little connect 4 AI project, except that you can drop pieces in from the left side and they float to the right, in addition to normal dropping from the top. I actually tied for first place in the tournament. Didn't figure tha

I'v been using http://wingify.com/ and have been quite happy with it. It's by a fellow HN member. Not sure if it fits your exact needs, though.

Not the thread that started this whole thing, but here's the NeoGAF thread about the game's development. It has far more pictures and concept art than the official website. http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=381946 (Warning: typ

And all this time analysts were saying Google would stand down from its principles on this matter. I quite like this page: http://www.google.com/prc/report.html#hl=en as well as the general tenor of these actions.

It isn't mentioned here, but hashes are a big win in terms of memory savings. The hash representation for small hashes is very efficient compared to keeping top level keys. You can get savings of around 25% by moving data into hashes with f

I sometimes wonder if these stories belong here, due to the incendiary properties and tangential relationship to start-ups. Not that I don't think Hacker News could handle the discussion more or less maturely.

Just develop an eye for observation. It's very difficult for me to go through an entire day without noticing a new opportunity for a start-up. There are some very obvious behaviours you can look for to identify opportunity. Any time you see

It's weird to me that you aren't using your own product on your website. Or if you are, I looked around for it for a long time and didn't find it. You don't think it would be a natural fit for your own start-up? ;-) You could display all th

Go become close friends with "someone like that". Turns out hackers are people too. A solid partner isn't someone you recruit and evaluate. A joint venture isn't going to succeed if one person in it forms an entitlement complex wherein "it

It makes sense to me. The Wikimedia foundation greatly enriches the quality of Google's search results for the majority of users. I almost always want the Wikipedia article when I search for something.

I don't think it's a huge issue, but what the point of is when you want to use a non-websafe font, then you've got to use one of these font replacement schemes. And those don't do subpixel rendering. And so you'd use this. Presumably. You c

You need to sell this idea better. Right now it feels very much like a solution without a problem. You talk about stickiness briefly, but without specific and concrete use cases I'm not convinced. You might want to investigate thesixtyone.
