That's basically the extent of the copy protection we use. The idea is that pirates probably aren't going to buy your app anyway, and any significant time you spend trying in vain to beat them is time taken away from fixing bugs, writing ne

I'm honestly surprised that some people are so desperate to not pay $5 for Angry Birds. I mean, I sort of understand pirating $800 apps like Adobe's suite, but $5 for a bird slingshot game? For full disclosure's sake, I am an iOS and Mac de

Most indie Mac developers will tell you they don't really concern themselves with app piracy. This is the same thing; someone still has to upload the dmg to some shady website, the pirate has to find it and remove the DRM files, and then do

Sorry, I meant Angry Mac Bastards. It's a podcast based on yelling. Normally I know better than to throw around obscure acronyms like that.

Sort of a tangental topic, but I hate it when people post slides like this. These sorts of things should always work better as a blog post. If your slides are good presentation slides, they're not detailed enough to work without a presenter

Really, the goal is both. Consulting is a much more reliable way to generate income in the iOS market, but the app store is steadier if you can get a good performer out there. I'm trying to use consulting (and grow the business that way in

I actually agree, and i'm taking steps to make that happen and move from a freelancer to a sustainable boutique iOS development shop. That's more startup-y, right? :)

I am. I don't know if I'm technically a startup; right now it's just me doing freelance iOS development, but it's paying the bills.

I haven't looked into Sencha but I have seen things like Appcelerator and Mono Touch. I personally have no problem with people who want to use some other framework to write iOS apps. It's good to know other languages (something I'm personal

Happy to do it! This is the question I've gotten most. It's probably worth a future blog post, but I'll give you the short answer I've been giving others so far. The best thing is word of mouth. Once you have some happy clients, they will t

I haven't worked with Core Text directly. Cool ideas though, if you need a hand with anything specific there let me know and I'll look into it. :)

Unfortunately this is one of those things I can't speak to very well, because I wouldn't consider my marketing efforts for my own apps to be successful. For me, it's been trying to build the best apps I can, and then send them along to frie

When I go down to Miami, I often forget and ask for sweet tea, and get unsweet with sugar packets. It's not the same! Also, how do you get it with no ice? Most of the sweet tea I get here is brewed very fresh, and without the ice it would b

The way we become equally supportive of each other is by not forming little "sub-communities" based on race, religion, gender, orientation, eye color, hair color, car color or anything else. I don't care if the person helping me with some c

Maybe it's that. Or maybe they feel that clique-tracking in this environment is noise and doesn't belong here. Or they had a bad day and are taking it out on HN. Don't assume you know some anonymous person's motivations.

Yeah I took on a short Mac project a number of months back and got really messed up with the switch. The ubiquity of Core Animation on the iOS was what spoiled me I think. Don't hold your breath for bindings on iOS though. I'd rather have g

I've been doing the former, and it definitely needs to change. I'm obsessing more about tracking my time to help me with future estimates, for one. I will also try breaking down into finer granularity and hopefully that will help as well. T

I'm not sure I agree with you here. I think in general, if you're straight up cloning an app, you're probably missing out on what makes people like the app in the first place. Or you just don't care, and you're trying to shove something out
