I don’t think you can know that. He might be on campus on Tuesdays, work at home Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and enjoy a work-free weekend. (Though he’s an academic, so “his work is his life” is not unlikely.)

I strongly disagree that the bold symbols are better, even though they’re what blackboard bold was originally conceived to approximate. The reason: Bold font draws attention (ask a typographer about type color), but usually, the bolder symb

Except that NoAnswer has none of the language’s (and it’s library’s) support for the built-in None. And you might run into problems when trying nest the data structure, which might be a reasonable thing for your users to do.

I often run into the opposite problem: There are union types, but I would really like sum types (i.e. tagged unions). The common case is a data structure where I cannot guarantee that the user will not want to use Null as a value in my data

I think any type of parsing benefits from some happy-path/unhappy-path support in the language, because parsing essentially is about figuring out whether your input conforms to some format and then translating it into a more useful rep

I also don’t buy the argument that it’s faster: Ctrl-k, Shift-f, Shift-a is still six keypresses, and they’re more awkward than just typing forall.

Sure: And the best way we have found (maybe just so far?) has been to introduce more symbolism. But even today, all guides on good mathematical writing urge you not to go overboard with them; a well-written mathematical text is a reasonable

I think the point is that only developers on Macs need to ignore them. If they properly do so, these files will never appear on other developer’s machines, and they therefore don’t need them in .gitignore.

Yeah, TextMate was great. I think it was the very intuitive way in which you could quickly extend it. Find yourself typing this thing over and over? Just create a snippet, the interface is just very few clicks away. Need a bit more power? T

I think this happens because generally, autocorrect will do its thing after pressing space, or some other type of white space. At the end of a message, we usually press enter, which then serves both as the autocorrect trigger and the send t

I agree that it’s much more polished. However, because you can constantly just get into the skies and glide over everything, you (or, at least, I) don’t get as much of a “feeling” for the world as in BotW. I still remember several situation

It’s even worse as you cannot even update a record if it has a qualified name. { Module.record | field = value } is not allowed. So either, you need to import record unqualified, or you need a let construction. I somewhat get the

No, I^n is also uncountable. In fact, the usual proof for the uncountability of R is really proof of the uncountability of I, and then the natural injection into R is used to extend it to R.

By applying the map from I^d to R^d (using the tan-arctan-construction above in each coordinate) after the map from R to R^d, you get a map from R to R^d.

I think you have misconceptions about what continuity means and I’m not even sure what you mean with holes. As a simpler example: The map that multiplies each rational number by -1 and keeps irrational numbers as they are is bijective (it’s

Because continuity is not required here. There are non-continuous bijections between R and R^2.

You can get from R^d to I^d (with I the open unit interval) easily by applying x -> (arctan(x) + pi/2)/pi and y -> tan(pi * y - pi/2) to each coordinate. There are also ways to go from R to the closed unit interval. You

I think it’s a bit more complicated than that. The EU law will need to be implemented by national laws and at least in Germany, there is Art 10 GG (the 10th paragraph of the constitution) which protects one’s rights to private communication

Well, from the linked post it seems like you’re paying $12 and you’re still the product. (There is no mention of reduced ads, for example.) (Though the truth has always been that you’re part customer, part product, of course.)

In my experience, that’s not entirely true. Some of my mathematician friends claim that they (and other people they know) often rather read the source code than the type-set result. I’m inclined to believe it because the biggest problem wit
