You might want to enable automatic gc either way just so it's cleared out every now and then. https://nixos.org/nixos/options.html#nix.gc

My tip: don't use nix-env to install packages like it's Aptitude or Pacman, use `nix run` if you need a package temporarily, home-manager if you need a user-level package permanently, or just straight up change the configuration.n

If you aren't doing any of that for the Aeropress (which you "should") I'm not sure why you think you need to do the same for a pourover. You can just experiment and eyeball it like you do for the Aeropress

Yeah, I love Aeropress coffee but after burning myself while using the inverted method I've resolved to using Kalita Wave at work and Chemex at home. I do sometimes miss the flexibility of the Aeropress, especially doing 15 minute brew

Why not follow Singapore and have both? Any greenery you cut down to build something must be replaced, and in Singapore that happens to be replaced by becoming part of the building itself. It's a very unique, and IMO, cool look when th

Both Monzo and Starling are good. If you're good at budgeting and never dip into negative balances I suggest getting a cashback or points credit card too, and then you can simply put your income into an instant savings account until yo

Nix as a language is tiny. If you know functional programming at all you won't have any trouble with it and can "learn" it in days if you put in the effort. NixOS isn't complicated because of the language.

That's likely due to HiDPI displays. A regular display is probably in the 100 DPI range, but we have phones that are in the 400 DPI range, so that icon size suddenly isn't so big anymore.

I wish more repositories took the NixOS approach of writing the build scripts (+ patches if necessary) on GitHub for easy visibility and a more familiar way to submit a new or upgraded package. Once approved the binary is built and distribu

Every time someone posts Web Bluetooth someone brings up security, which is fair, but I don't think it's productive to immediately dismiss it. The Chrome developers behind the spec have thought a lot about the security implication

I remember GNOME support was spotty when I used it two years ago. I returned this year to NixOS 18.09 just before 19.03's release and GNOME's been solid throughout, and I'm using 19.09 now.

Not necessarily, you can use coerce or Newtype instances, so you'd import one thing to deal with all the boilerplate wrapper types in all the modules they come from. This is specific to Haskell, but you could mimic it in other language

It sounds like if you're not the "average listener" you'd be spending way more money than with Spotify. If you thoroughly enjoy an album every day you'd spend like $300 a month from the sound of it. They also state

I don't think it is. First, a correction, Python predates Nix by 12 years, not decades, the first experimentation with what would later be named Nix was published in 2003 by Eelco Dolstra[1]; the 2004 paper[2] refers to it specifically

Yeah the packaging part of NixOS/Nixpkgs is very pleasant. You write a "config" in the Nix language (example[1] of vorbis-tools, it's <40 LOC), open a PR on Github and it'll be submitted provided you follow the C

One of the issues with STM is you can't use IO inside the atomic blocks, which is easy enough to get around but if your users are unaware it'll present bugs. Haskell enforces a separation of IO at the type-level, hence this risk i

I don't know Ruby or Elixir's way of doing this, but I assume it's not too dissimilar to in Haskell and I'd argue there isn't much ambiguity -- the spaces are enough to discern arguments once you get used to it, and

I share experiences in a similar vein: a book being cancelled and refunded for being 'undeliverable', a CPU (one of the most important components in a full computer build, rendering it useless) ending up at the wrong facility, new
