Manifold: Space by Stephen Baxter covers this conjecture, for anyone interested in a fictional treatment.

The latter is probably true but not germane. Nobody else was talking about sterilizing the planet, and there are many much less severe possible futures that still qualify as nightmare scenarios. Some of them could even conceivably happen, u

My understanding is that the yield was halved by the use of a lead tamper, rather than a uranium one. The tamper is a shield around the core that slows down the explosion in order to consume the reactants more fully. In production they comm

Another trick (that really only pays off if you're using a huge amount) is to put them in a pot with a lid and shake the shit out of it. The husks get ripped right off! I never actually do it because A) it takes a lot of shaking and B)

I worked at WF years ago on/around the WF-RIA project. They have the strongest frontend culture I've seen at any company before or since. I'm sure they'll be fine.

Whatever you decide "the" fourth dimension "is" (what's the first? second? third?), it doesn't stop someone else from imagining a world with an additional spatial dimension. Relativity does imply a close relati

Agreed, that seems totally backward from my experience. I notice no justification is given either, apart from describing both refactors (small->large and large->small).

You cite heart disease as a "real disease", but all that term means is "the heart's operation is being impacted by a pathology". What makes the brain so different from the heart that it can't be ill, even when

Sacrificial lamb, what are you talking about? What kind of sacrifice would it have been for Eich to not become CEO of Mozilla? I already make that sacrifice every day. So many commenters want to make it all about what a small donation it wa

Very good and timely question, but I smell a selection bias. Regular exercisers probably just logged in to vote, and couch potatoes probably just hit the back button.

I like using toString to convince the console to omit parentheses. Another way would be to use getters, like so: window.__defineGetter__('help', function () { console.log('I\'m here for you'); });

I don't think Github is honor-bound to let people use their service to be divisive or hurtful (and it is hurtful to make a joke that boils down to "you people sound so ridiculous when you're asking for fair treatment").

For what it's worth there are no occurrences of "sorry" or "apologize" in that letter.

Well, except that the protagonist is an obsessive ideologue nerd who would rather hate a Web browser than be happy. If that's supposed to be an apology then it's the ultimate "I'm sorry you feel that way".

Same - I agree with the main thrust but the author would do well to find his own voice rather than trying to be some kind of Tim Ferriss Mountain Dew commercial.

Scary thought: this bug is nice and obvious when the data gets "clamped" to max_int, but what about when it doesn't and overflows to some value in the middle? No way to tell how many systems suffer from that flavor.

What DOES the term PC imply? I don't mean to try to get at a sensible a priori definition of "PC" - I'm aware that as far as the world is concerned they're just branding terms used by Apple. But where the delineation is obvious when we're c

You're right, but look up gravity drag. Every second you're standing on your boosters you're wasting fuel. Imagine wearing a jetpack and wasting all your fuel hovering an inch off the ground. If you turn horizontal the thrust is invested ra

Why not aim for the horizon? That way your track can be on the ground, and even better your impulse is spent approaching orbital speed rather than struggling against gravity drag. Even traditional space rockets turn east as quickly as possi

Pragmatic Thinking And Learning is outstanding. I killed at least one highlighter on the first read. It's a permanent bonus to your first derivative. In fact, thanks for reminding me it's time for a re-read.

Every day the old technologies get a little more penetration and the world at large is a little more ready for the next one. There's no market for Twitter if the wrench hasn't yet been invented, but that doesn't mean there never will be. Te
