One does not always have to take titles so literally. I expect there to be a bit of "sizzle" not "steak" in a title because it has to catch your eye and compete with other titles. I had a chuckle yesterday because there

For all their supposed mathematical basis, in reality a lot of these models are based on curve fitting ultimately. Assumptions are made and treated almost as axioms. Things like "Russia will never default on its debt". Well they d

Within the business environment there is an unwritten rule that applies surprisingly often: Coming into work early tends to mean you are enthusiastic and a go-getter. Staying late means you are inefficient and have poor planning.

I had a brief fling with ebooks, but it was over pretty much as soon as it started. I will still break out my kindle every now and again I am sure, but I am not a fan of ebooks. A few things pushed me away from ebooks: - I feel that in many

Almost invariably there will be a minority of any community that will disagree with any issue. What makes HN interesting is that it will never be the same minority. I would take exception on your use of the word "sizeable", but we

Almost all problems with gender discrimination in tech that get my attention, originated here in HN. I seriously doubt that the majority of the HN community would in any way be in favour of sweeping gender issues under the carpet.

I have a few data points - I worked in the banking industry for many years and saw this sort of behaviour all the time. People, including entire teams were fired, not because the banks were losing money and had to cut jobs to survive, but s

It matters because given the current climate of anti-immigrant rhetoric, immigration may become nigh on impossible. If this had happened a few decades ago there would be no Steve Jobs and no Apple, and an important contribution to American

Since it is not clear what the point is: This depicts a mural by Banksy (a well known British street artist) indicating that Steve Jobs was the son of a Syrian immigrant. > EDIT: Title has now been changed to make it more clear.

Ask yourself, right now in Yahoo, all things being equal, who will get the promotion, the lady taking a 2 week maternity leave, or the one taking the 12 week maternity leave? I can guarantee you that although in theory it should make no dif

It is a known problem, but not a solved problem, in that there does not appear to be 1 best way to map a 3d surface onto a 2d map and vice-versa. There are numerous approximations, but which one to use is an art and not a science.

This is the problem with rules, laws and organizations created during, or as a result of, a crisis. There really should be an expiry date, or review system for when circumstances change, but there never is. So we end up with the Maple Syrup
