Besides persistence, terminal multiplexing is one of the greats things of tmux. If I'm programming on a remote machine I don't want to open a new ssh connection from each of the five terminals that I need. Seems tedious when I can

Not to disagree, but if your company has around 300,000 LoC in business logic and your pet project has 1,000 LoC, the processing times are going to be significantly different.

IMO, the big is one good/smart programming language support, either out of the box or with a few clicks. If you know vim well, the vim plugin has serious limitations though. On windows/linux the reliance on home/end/pgup

Isn't this already easily achievable with ssh? with 'ssh -D[port] foo@somehost' ssh will act as a SOCKS server.
