The problem is multifaceted; first, JS crypto is slow in most current implementations (but will get better with Typed Arrays). Second and more importantly, it is difficult to ensure total security on a page. While loading all assets from a

Essentially, that's a call to Math.random() 16 times that picks from a pool of 62 characters each time, allowing for 62^16 possible combinations, or 4.7 * 10^28 possibilities. You've made me aware that this could possibly make brute forcing

So has it only been 8 weeks since the beginning and you're planning on shipping in 4? Otherwise I don't really understand the 'shipped in 12 weeks' remark.

I'm speaking about my site, not Mega, which works in Firefox, Chrome for Android and Safari. Although Safari support is limited for now and has actually moved measurably backwards in the last few weeks. The better version of this post likel

HTTPS is not always the answer, and Securesha.re is not meant to be a direct competitor to Mega. We are focused less on enabling the sharing of movies & applications and more on the sharing of sensitive documents, private information, a

In addition, 128-bit encryption is more than safe. In order to brute force it (and you will have to, there are no known vulnerabilities in Rabbit), you need to try up to 3.4 10^38 keys. The fastest supercomputers in the world would take abo

Christ, many of us on this site could likely get away with retiring now & moving to Thailand, if you really can assume 5-7% long(long!)-term returns on the stock market.

This is a really fantastic, simple way of looking at it. There are of course many other factors that go into it. One that may very well work in your favor is saving while living in a big city, then moving some place small later on. This cou

For nodeheads who also do web development, this is a great tool. The syntax is incredibly familiar, and tests are executed quickly. Selenium is a better tool to test cross-browser compatibility, but if you're just testing your program logic

Thanks for this! I manage a bunch of sites that get less than 10k visits/day and I always thought the speed data was really lacking. This is a huge help.

There's at least one HN reader (I believe it's actually called "Hacker News Reader") that allows you to view the text-only cached version of article URLs. Definitely worth it if you're data-starved.

To be honest... since you can't try/catch, you can't do much. You can catch the exception with something like this: process.on('uncaughtException', function (err) { console.err("Uncaught exception: " + err); console.err("Uncaugh

I agree. One of the advantages of the (err, result) style is that it puts error handling directly in your face. The `result typeof Error` style does not. In any case all I care about is that we choose one, and (err, result) is gaining tract

Unfortunately error handling in Node.js is a total mess. As with most new technologies there are few standards and whatever standards there are are subject to change. It was only a short time ago that many Node.js libs were being produced w

Right - but that's WiMAX only. TBH the extra $30/mo is great to connectivity almost everywhere, even if it is awful EVDO Rev A. You can also do the same with a rooted android Sprint phone... and get phone service to boot. IMO a better deal.

Way to go Github! I think it is quite clear that pull requests are the best feature of Github and a boon to the OSS community in general. This feature is a welcome tightening.

Absolutely. Yield will transform node.js syntax, which is fantastic. Proxies are really interesting - think about how knockout.js syntax might change if it could hook directly into property changes on regular objects.
