Natick is a town in Massachusetts, as the FAQ says; it's also the home of Natick Labs, which over the years has done interesting R&D. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Army_Natick_Sold... ETA: that&#

You're right to be concerned. I paid $1500 for it, three times that to have the misfire issue "fixed" (among a bunch of other delayed maintenance), and after the misfire came back I gave up. I've been driving it on 5 cyl

my truck runs on five of the six cylinders available to it, and shakes like it does. Holding the steering wheel with my left hand means I hit step goals like crazy.

I reported a huge problem in Google Maps for years and it wasn't fixed. A bunch of POIs for downtown Seattle were transposed to downtown Kirkland. Search for directions from Microsoft campus to the Seattle Federal Building and it would

RS-232 is also how you get PPS off your GPS for maximum clock accuracy. emulated RS-232 over USB wasn't good enough as of a couple years ago

I worked building a bank once where a detail cost us a bunch of heartburn estimating and building. Having the architect stop by, look at it, and say "I had no idea if you guys could build that" was infuriating.

only place I've had a seamless experience is a Coke machine in the Best Western in Moscow, Idaho. Everywhere else has sucked or not worked.

I haven't lived in my car since 92 or so and I still notice nice places to park where the police won't bug me.

Microsoft paid my entire relocation expense and I never (directly) saw a bill or paid a dime for it. I know Qualcomm does the same thing. I was on the hook for a year - if I quit before one year was up, I owed Microsoft some pro-rated amoun

this is a shortcoming of laser cutters. On material under 6.5 mm thick, there isn't enough thermal mass to soak up the heat you need to put a small hole all the way through. With birch, it catches on fire. With steel, it melts and look

I think you can almost stop that at the word acquired. I loved pre-acquisition FolderShare. After Microsoft bought them, FolderShare was mashed into a bunch of aborted projects that sucked.

Glad to read this. So much so-called A/B testing done is of the naive variety he outlines. Much more here: http://www.exp-platform.com/Pages/default.aspx disclosure: I worked with ExP a while ago.

What kills me is I worked with an ex-Apple guy - I asked how they do build farms, and apparently it (is or was) commodity hardware. I didn't press on what exactly that was but I was picturing something like an array of big HP boxes run

Build farms is what I used them for. Currently we rent three Mac Pros from MacStadium and run our OS X VMs there, which is much nicer than a bunch of minis. I hate Apple's OS X license.

I am a fan of the PEL series of podcasts; in the beginning, they try to have each podcast build on the prior ones to build philosophy from first principles. They no longer give all 100-so of them away, so you might have to pay for them, but
