FWIW, I'm using Angular (1.x) on a project at work, rather than React. One of the things I did recently was take the CSS file used in the project ("Few Pages App", rather than SPA, which had a common .css file), and turn i

Imagine if every 50 years or so all the land was seized and redistributed among the people/families. How diabolical! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jubilee_(biblical) Of course, this doesn't actually happen.

So, if a business is in an office downtown, and there is little real benefit to forcing workers to drive to the common location every day, they would be incentivized to move out to make room for a business (or other activity) that values th

What would happen if we shifted away from income tax to property taxes and import tariffs at the federal level? (adjusted as needed to be "revenue neutral")

I suppose 2 things would help * Raise taxes on the very rich, and use it to hire people to keep the commons in order. * Get lazy people to go back to school and study to do non-basket-weaving subjects to more efficiently make things that ea

Hmm. I find that classes and subclasses aren't all that useful, now that I can use higher order functions :-) (I still use classes/objects for services with multiple related operations or polymorphism, but not for one trick pony

I think I would rather do future "systems level" work in Rust than C, but I'm not sure it would eliminate the desire for automatic memory management in a casual or "ENTERPRISE!!!" (... no intelligent life here, Scot

Perhaps menu-driven refactoring is overrated? (much like IDE generated getter/setter code, which is solving the wrong problem)

Ramda is pretty cool. It's also a really good introduction to use-cases for partial function application ("currying"), vs silly "adder" examples. (think of partial function application as dependency injection for

Try using one of the JetBrains IDE's, such as IntelliJ or Webstorm, on plain old Javascript some time. It does a surprisingly good job inferring the methods on an object, as well as autocompleting the names of stand-alone functions (m

Thanks for the response, it was just a rant. I suspect the Rust community and I simply have irreconcilable differences. They want a better C or C++, and like special character ditties such as &, *, <_> (whatever that does), and I

It's a shame there aren't more "Modula" derived modern languages, rather than trying to force C into being a higher level language. Java, especially at the 1.1 mark, felt like some kind of crippled version of Borland

Somebody mentioned Brother printers elsewhere. I replaced my HP laser with a Brother laser a while back (just printing "stuff", not photos) I replaced my black cart on the HP (2600n) with a 3rd party product, and got away with it.

Big companies can get away with all kinds of "fecal production" in the US. We're not yet China or Mexico, but we sure as hell ain't the EU, either. All your legislative bases are belong to us, or some such rot.

I would argue that enforcing, or at least favoring, immutability and the ability to trace data flow is more helpful that static types. You could have both, but I know which one I would rather give up first. (actually, in the best of all w

Further aside: it's funny that in popular use, "abstract" means "unintelligible", but in math, it means "well defined shorthand", for the purposes of making bigger problems approachable, at all.

Those are some good points. Sometimes, though, you come across some new tricks (perhaps not that new, but anyway) that you really wish your coworkers would get on board with. E.g. - Our current big project at work uses a lot of Javascript.

You're right. But I've avoided bringing transpiling or polyfill stuff into our big project at work. I'm the only dev at work who really like JS at all, anyway, so I'm trying to keep it simple for the Java-only crowd.
