The mask came off this last year for me. If you look, there is often a lot of video on the ground of these events, so that you can see beyond a single narrative. In the same vein, there is a lot of video of what happened in Kenosha leading

Uneconomical, dragging a huge cone of air along with your plane. The pressure Wave in front of the moving plane moves away at the speed of sound, so it just stacks up.

Here in CA (possibly the rest of the US) they want to put an app on your phone to use Bluetooth to track who is in the room with you, because it’s not enough to know which end of the city block you are on at all times. Cuz, COVID! Pardon m

Thank you. I pulled in moment.js 5 years ago for a suite of state death and birth certificate registration apps we are working on. Due to the amount of “business logic” and small staff size on these, they take years to roll out. I apprecia

If corporations are people, they need to face imprisonment and capital punishment, too eh? Charters can be suspended or revoked.

Why can’t a state’s militia have its own military grade weapons and vehicles? Aside from the whole Civil War incident... I’m not going to argue if it’s a good or bad law, but as written, each state gets to regulate which residents get noth

Those users don’t get past our single sign on app in the first place. The “ticket granting ticket” used to give out sessions in individual apps expires after a few seconds, presumably to discourage various kinds of attacks. Not every app i

For anyone missing how little radiation that is, radiation is proportional to the 4th power of the temperature in Kelvin. 200 K is a bit below (water) freezing. 400 K is just over boiling. The 400 K object emits 16 times (2 ^ 4) more radi

Upvoting this more for the discussion than the article. There are a lot of relevant opposing forces in this discussion. Reasonable people can disagree about where in the middle to meet.

Thanks. How does iMPC compare to something like BeatMaker? Such as: use of AUs and external MIDI, sequences/scenes/patterns with different tempos or time signatures? The bit on the App Store video to grab and move a chunk of a pa

One thing I don’t miss is C style Wild West access. E.g., My coworker grabbed a word from somewhere, slapped a cast on it and proceeded to write into it. Hilarity ensues. All the burden of explicit compile time checking, but no guarantees

Reminder: strict type checking is more trouble than it’s worth for some of us. Ask yourself why dynamic type languages keep appearing, despite a fanatical resolve to purge them from the face of the earth? It’s almost as if some people pref

Interesting. I don’t think it’s that hard to build a vessel full of warm radioactive pebbles to boil water. Sorting ore by chemical element, and then making a fluid / gas / solution of the fuel element to sort by isotope mass in a

Is it that hard to enrich isotopes enough to make a steam engine that runs on radium, thorium or uranium instead of coal? If you know that radioactive isotopes exist, it sounds like steampunk, 1850s, level tech could build a power plant, bu

No, they are imaged in reflected light, rather than a transit (silhouette). The parent star is masked off, and I’m pretty sure it’s an image generated from multiple telescopes, “interferometry”, as others have mentioned.

You keep that up, and you’ll be hell banned next. I hear you, but I don’t pay for this toy, and the owner(s) run it as they see fit. I do agree with you though that I dislike down voting.

I have been lucky, then. I pulled in moment about 5 years ago into our group’s stack, but we mostly use it for parsing and formatting date (only) strings for date arithmetic. The government vital records forms we are working with seldom de

Overlays were common on MS-DOS in the 80s. A typical scheme was to have a configuration file / script for the linker. You would list one or more blocks, each of which had a list of mutually exclusive .obj files to be swapped in and ou

As to vertical size: how much crap are you going to put into one function, anyway? Other than perhaps some local (nested) helper functions.

I like it, but then I have adopted a style very similar to that in the last 3 or 4 years: format expressions to approximate their syntax tree, with closing symbols aligned with the line that opened the sub-tree. Essentially, K&R indent

Ok, so that’s a real thing, and not just a Charles Stross / Laundry Files reference. I guess it’s not too surprising that you would want to keep an eye out for rioting. Missiles would be a whole new level of messed up, though.

I’m so glad ES4 never happened. Bullet dodged. Nice to see that sometimes, at least, the industry avoids needless suffering. But I like that JS can be a primarily functional, rather than primarily object oriented, language.
