I think these are all fair points and a good reflection of the downside of Python. But there are also some pretty huge upsides. My view is that for any model of significant complexity, the pros of Python outweigh the cons from a technical

I'm really curious about this. I've noticed though time Amazon seem to be batching orders less often (This is in the UK, and merely anecdotal.) I was recently looking at the courier's parcel tracking app, i was interested re

I've used this and it's a great idea, and works well in some contexts. One downside to be aware of is that it routes your slides/screenshare through your webcam video feed. In some apps (e.g. Teams) this can dramatically redu

I don't think that's entirely fair. For instance, I host content on my personal website [0] that is written in using Observable, and in fact the site provides guides to allow anyone to export content[1] and embed elsewhere online.

My house had a kitchen extension built by previous owners. I count 27 lights in total, mostly in-ceiling spotlights. At least they're controlled with a normal switch. With decent quality, high powered LED bulbs like we have in the li

Interesting - I was vaguely aware of the existence of bookmarks. I'd be interested to know about what you're using them for - they definitely _sound_ useful. I guess it probably depends what sort of workloads you're doing.

We use Glue extensively, but we have a rule of thumb not to use any of the 'special sauce'. That means is using it purely for 'Spark as a service', so we're pretty much always reading/writing data from/

Agree with everything you say. One thing I have been surprised by is the quality of photo prints from my colour laser (Brother dcp-l8410cdw). Admittedly, my expectations were very low, and it's certainly a long way off high-quality pr

Even narrowly looking at congestion, the cost you rightly identify should be set against benefits. For example, what % of kids who are currently driven to school in gargantuan SUVs could drive themselves in an Ami? I would certainly rather

The study is here [1]. The relevant passage is: "Of those who reported having experienced symptoms of COVID-19 in the last seven days, only 18.2% (95% CI 16.4 to 19.9) said they had not left home since developing symptoms." There

I worked this out previously and came to the conclusion that electricity production needed to rise more like 50%. it was a while ago, but the vague calculation was something like this: UK electricity consumption/year: 301.7 TWh Miles

Apache Arrow reads csvs into memory in Arrow format, not pandas format. They are independent libraries that do different things. In Arrow, it is possible to read a csv in batches, obviating memory problems. See 'incremental reading&#

If you want to read csvs fast in Python, you should consider using the Apache Arrow[0] csv reader. Depending on your number of CPU cores it can be 10x-20x as fast as the native pandas reader. [1] More broadly, because Arrow is cross platfo

Absolutely agree. My biggest lightbulb moments with testing have come when needing to do significant refactoring. Without tests, I feel aimless because it's hard to get feedback about whether the refactoring has 'worked'.
