I visually highlight and call pbcopy on OS X and xclip on ubuntu. It has the annoying side effect of deleting the text, but a simple u fixes that. So, highlight in visual mode, go into command mode, and !pbcopy

It wasn't grey when I commented. I wouldn't take the time to get on a soapbox if the community had already buried it.

I see those on quite a few trucks in East Texas. I can't believe people actually do that.

nonexistent does not necessarily imply invalid. I don't use rails, so take my ignorance into account, but I'd hate to catch exceptions all the time instead of just checking for falsey values. Ex: "Enter your student ID" s = Student.fi

This type of useless comment is why I tend to avoid HN for periods at a time. Congrats, you've shown the world you know what "isomorphic" and "FSA" means, but did you initially bring anything constructive? No. You had to edit in things bar

You honestly sound a bit dramatic here. Make sure you don't make the issue bigger than what it is.

It's hard to develop a thick skin. I get my feelings legitimately hurt by people, even online. I don't deal with confrontation well at all. The best I can do is make sure I don't instigate conflict needlessly, and be sure to hang around nic

Wow, sounds like you've hung out with a tough crowd. There's nothing wrong with being proud of your work, and I'm terribly sorry some rude people have tried to take that away from you through such dishonest means. Keep your chin up :)

I will never let myself consider $30-40k to be poor, at least in Texas. That's enough money to take care of an average family and still have a very nice Christmas. I'm young, in college, and working full time to support my family (which inc

Choose a random article in the top 10 of HN at any given time, and there's a very high chance that the top upvoted comment is either FUD or overly critical. I feel like there is a lot more ego here than in /r/programming.

It's probably an effective warning to the fence-sitters. If you're extremely determined to be CEO, you're probably going to brush off the warnings and go through with your plan regardless. That's how I perceive it, at least.

HN is not more civil. Perhaps less likely to be distracted, but not nicer (if that's what you mean by civil)

Fun read :) I'm not sure if this is correct: > By elements we mean the size of the type of the array. If an array holds elements of type int which each occupy four bytes, then integer_array[5000] is the same as *(integer_array + (

This point gets brought up a lot, but I'm not going to complain at all. In fact, just 5-6 months ago I used to be one of those programmers who would do # gets the xml def get_xml(): It took comments like this to help me realiz

Do any of these behave like Python's virtualenv? I really like how virtualenv works, and if I ever want to get semi-serious with Ruby, I'd like to have something similar.

This post is 30% technical, 70% politics. Essentially, the author is upset that the author of rbenv[0] decided to criticize rvm instead of opening tickets and whatnot. The author then goes on to blame the rbenv author for the year long dela

I'm on the fence when it comes to operator overloading. I appreciate the readability gains, but the behavior absolutely has to be predictable. For example, my biggest gripe with ruby's bcrypt library is how == is non commutative. They do pr
