Is this orangey feature retroactive on old comments at real time, or is it permanent for posts regardless of current karma?

It depends upon the application. I run a semi-popular forum, so I require email addresses to keep the ban evaders, trolls, and spambots out. If you think you're going to have problems with the former two, keep the email requirement. However

Microsoft can get away with this while OS X and Ubuntu (and other Linux distros) can offer 'advanced' functions for free is because of their massive business base. Out of the box a Mac has a full RSA keychain service, encrypted VPN, file an

I stopped reading at t-shirts because that's (kinda) my business. While it's not just about the t-shirts, I run a video game community and we sell legally unofficial merchandise like t-shirts and hoodies to support the website. If you have

I know the Rails team has worked hard towards getting 1.9 compatibility, but what are your opinions about using this on production servers? (I'm kinda edgey myself, it's why I ask.)

Personally, I've had more trouble with macports than necessary. (Mostly because whenever I type 'port', I still get command not found.) It's much easier just to download the source, ./configure , make , and sudo make install .

"Plus, how much value does an iMac give you?" I do care gaming. It came with an 8800, mobile variant of course, but good enough of a reason back in April. It's still quite a bit better than the stock 9600 the new MBPs have. Plus the 24" s

"As predicted, the mobile world has beaten the desktop to the web of the future." Technically, not really. Most people I know have the IE of phones: just some crappy Nokia or something that just text messages and phone calls.

It's Whirlpool ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whirlpool_(cryptography) ) which has common libraries in PHP & Ruby and accepted in a couple of international standards. I think it's better to replace "lesser known" with "uncommonly used"

According to various comments I've seen on blogs, Reddit, etc., Destructoid didn’t even hash their passwords. I was kinda worried because I run a lower-key gaming site ( http://forum.fangamer.com ), but I salt and seed my passwords and use

I went to one that closed earlier in the year. The problem is that the prices don't even beat online prices. For example, there was an external 1TB hard drive for $150 (after 50% off) which you can easily get online for $100.

If I had to take a quick guess, it's because Akamai charges by the bandwidth. While your (paid) MSDN account supports the Akamai charges, the general public will just get leftover bandwidth from various services which is 'free'.

I hate it when people quote the $70/mo. Do you not pay for a regular cell service? If you actually look at the numbers, the pricing is exactly the standard AT&T plans + $30/mo unlimited data plan. (If you can get regular AT&T at a d

I've started to see a lot of iPhones around campus where I'm at and asked a lot of people why they got theirs. It's word of mouth about the easy upgrade from an iPod. At least 50% had their iPod die for some reason or another and decided t

In the case of Facebook, instead you would shard by feature. Every database server has replicateds of the user/friends data, but there'd be a separate server for the events or for groups.

There was an article recently that said that the iPhone sold roughly 50% in the US and 50% elsewhere. It's still pretty US-centric, but it's growing around the world.
