I read an in depth article on Watson a few months back and I remember that it said it does in fact do that sort of confidence-based buzzing, but I'm not 100% sure.

It's really more like "Can we fool ourselves into believing that machines think?" which isn't actually any different from the question "Can we fool ourselves into believing other people think?"

If you read further on Searle and the Chinese Room, you'll find that most of his argument has been debunked and what remains is an Appeal to Common Sense. "The man in the room can't really understand Chinese--right guys?"

The problem is that Groupon's customers aren't actually the people buying coupons, it's the businesses selling coupons, and we've heard plenty of horror stories from that side of the coin. Whether that aspect is enough to dig Groupon's grav

Yes for modern phones, although I can't say how many free texts is considered enough. If you're not on an unlimited plan and you start texting with someone who is, you can quickly stack up hundreds of texts without realizing it...

There's a distinction between substances that interact with brain chemistry in a particular way to enhance addictive behavior, and the circumstances that predispose some people more than others to seek out addictive substances as a means of

I know what the term means, but that doesn't make it true. The parenthetical in your statement is my point precisely; hardly 'hard-wired' if it's potentially a product of misguided thinking.

I guess what I take issue with is the use of the term 'hard-wired' as the exact causes of ADHD are not known, nor is it necessarily permanent.

It occurs to me that governments and computer programs are not that different. Both suffer immensely from code rot.

"US authorities had begun another round of domain name seizures, this time against sites connected with sports streaming." I'll just assume the fact that this is Superbowl Weekend is purely coincidence here...

I mostly agree with you, but I'm wondering what precisely you mean by 'hard-wired to be impulsive'.

I noticed that Amazon has (relatively) recently changed their results pages so that it preloads the first 4 results of the next page. When you click next, the next 4 results show immediately, and then the rest of the results start loading.

I was responding to a post about 'holding back 6 months salary' as a safety measure, with a simple example of how to do so. Obviously, this is something to do before you go and start a family. My point was not that it's possible for everyo

If you're willing to move, and live with roommates, it's fairly easy to live comfortably (assuming no children) on 12k/year total. Assuming you're making minimum wage-ish, that's 8k to put in the bank every year.

I opted for 1day once when I needed a new monitor ASAP. When you're already paying $250, $4 for one day shipping seems cheap. Two day shipping occasionally gets here in one day, but sadly I'm late in the UPS delivery route so nothing shows

WPF/XAML is terribly obnoxious as a layout system. Spark in Flex 4 is a much more reasonable system, and even then it still has its annoying foibles.

That's like saying the wives of soldiers in Afghanistan shouldn't worry about their husbands because Terrorism is much worse. We're advanced creatures, I think we can handle worrying about multiple things at once.

I'm pretty sure they're using quotes there as actual quotes -- as in, the 'developed' part is a literal quote of something someone said or printed. BBC News does this all the time.
