No. A Kinect uses structured light projection to create a discernible pattern. A Velodyne uses Time-of-Flight lasers.

The problem is not the AI (driving is relatively simple), but the sensors. Cameras are bad vs. our eyes.

What would you use this factory robot for? Also, the setup time of any factory automation task is huge - would you be willing to pay for this as well?

My book, Hacking the Kinect, came out: http://amzn.to/H8slu4 At work, we received release to show the world the Hybrid Safety System for robots: http://bit.ly/Hp818r I also cut a demo for a stealth startup I'm working at. =)

The Sand Flea would be able to monitor an area for far longer and is much quieter than a quadcopter. Also, the Sand Flea can enter buildings/caves, and likely carry a small munition load. The REF doesn't invest in things that aren't ready

Pittsburgh, PA/No Remote/Fulltime Do you have a passion for building things? Do you love making your work "go" in the real world? Do you want to build big robots? The National Robotics Engineering Center is hiring computer scientists, el

There already are unmanned oil platforms. As communications and remote systems get better, I expect to see even more automation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normally_unmanned_installation http://www.shell.com/home/content/innovation/me

You don't congratulate someone for getting married as an introduction when their technical chops are what got them there. This was an awful intro - you want to establish someone's right to be there with an introduction, not comment on thei

The wireless becomes the issue then, as the network effect quickly takes over. Sensing at high speed with bad sensors and low power/computation is really tough.

No, I think the hardware is exactly the same. There's a firmware update.

Near mode lacks skeleton tracking - I'd expect more after the skeleton tracking is fixed.

You could do this already with a high enough resolution camera - the Kinect doesn't add anything new that makes this more possible.

Probably not - if so, it'll be something that comes from the hacking community, not from Microsoft.

Depending on what you're going to use it for, I would recommend just sticking with the XBox Kinect and either of the major other options: OpenKinect ( http://openkinect.org/ ) or OpenNI ( http://www.openni.org/ )

You can't use the Kinect SDK with Linux. If you're interested in learning more about the driver interface, OpenKinect is FOSS and runs on any platform: http://openkinect.org

Actually, the hardware is likely unchanged. The original "Kinect for XBox" can see that close, but with error. The biggest changes are in the firmware and the Microsoft Kinect SDK. The SDK itself didn't allow for any data that close.

MS also has to fund the Kinect SDK team and Microsoft Research that develops new applications for the Kinect. Examples include Kinect Fusion ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quGhaggn3cQ ) and the Holodesk ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JH

The new Kinect hardware has a "near mode" and there's been discussions of adding upper body skeleton tracking, as well as gesture recognition.

The Xtion is depth sensing only - a Kinect branded sensor would likely have both RGB and depth, like the other Kinects.

This may seem like nitpicking, but I am always worried when I look at a website and the blog hasn't been updated for months. Even a short "Hey guys! We're working on stuff!" would assuage my fears that you've turned into a zombiecorp. =)

I've written any paper I've worked on in the last 7 years in LaTeX as soon as it gets over 5 pages or has any math of any kind in it. I'm currently writing a book with a publish house that uses Word templates (dear god!) and it really sucks
