It turns out that anyone who wants to can just go on the Internet and spout bollocks. I like how there isn’t even a byline here, just “editorial staff.” Because who’d sign their name to this kind of tomfoolery?

At some point it does come down to "we have to trust the provider isn't outright lying to us about what they're doing." That was a hard bridge for me to cross for a long time; I got there via sustained in-depth conversat

You can shock the hell out of yourself with the capacitors for the flash in a disposable camera, so the AAA battery source isn't exactly exculpatory...

I do want to point out that I wrote this in 2019. It was a vastly different landscape, and AWS did a terrible job of promoting the ML value proposition.

I should have been more clear. You still need to partition, but randomizing the prefixes hasn't been needed since 2018: https://web.archive.org/web/20240227073321/https://aws.amazo...

Yes. It’s under pressure that oxygen toxicity becomes an issue. It’s why you’ve gotta pay attention to your depth when diving with enriched air.

You’re absolutely right that we don’t have a complete postmortem—and that’s exactly the problem. I’d love to have real facts from AWS about the full scope of this incident. But instead of a disclosure, we got a version quietly pulled from t

Exactly my position. I can’t realistically assess the potential scope of damage without a proper disclosure from AWS’s normally-excellent security team.

You need far more than that. Beyond the basic resource sizing / misconfiguration issues, it’s highly contextually dependent to an environment / institution. A change that’s great for one customer could be ruinous for another.

My original title did mention that this was an AWS product, but Hacker News made the editorial decision to reduce clarity.

I got to play with this for the past week, and it's surprisingly good from an angle of "does a lot of the context engineering work for you." It enforces a rigor that I don't usually bring to vibe coding...

I saw a lot of third party services (i.e. CloudFlare) go down, but did any non-Cloud Google properties see an impact? It’d say something that core Google products don’t or won’t take a dependency on Google Cloud…
