Turns out that once you invent a system for "acceptance" (p < 0.05 or whatever), people will game it. Who knew?

There is certainly room for art in our world. I'm just saying that what companies sell as products should not be made in the "art" mindset. Is that clearer?

I'm always surprised by the mindset of the person you're replying to. I learned a few years ago from some DEFCON video[0] that someone had figured out a way to do a (basic) port scan of the whole internet in ~1 day (or something l

At the risk of just jumping on a single point: > I build things for people to use and maintain. Maintenance. Maintenance. Maintenance. That's the key. It is the lack of that mindset which is killing our home world. Ultimately, it&#x

Very well put. IME talking with our sysadmins face-to-face, I think a lot of the initial hostility was caused by emotional reactions like: This is different, I don't like it! (Don't get me wrong, it's a behavioral pattern tha

It's not much of a difference in terms of consequences, but always-on bounds checking could alleviate OOB'ing the JIT at least.

That's fair and I now know more. I'm not convinced that this is the biggest issue with JS engines/browsers, but I certainly have more evidence against me :). It's interesting how many of those are labeled OOB. Does that

I think Sapolsky's Behave also had a good insight here (not his, just referenced) about the importance of the general culture of a region -- namely whether it's a Collectivist or Individualist. This simple dichotomy can explain a

This is a very confusing thread for me. I think Idris -- while not exactly mainstream -- has shown that it's fine to treat type checking and types as a continuum. There's nothing about dependent types that forces anybody to prove

I haven't read Kill Decision, but I have read The Martian, so I'll answer in that vein. I don't think The Martian is realistic, or even a good predictor of anything. Now, there may be an expedition to Mars in future, but AFAI

A bit late... but as others have pointed out: This only works to the first order. If you have functions-that-call-functions-that-call-functions, you end up not being able to write(!) the correct throws clauses in Java.

(Just adding a bit to that:) It's not just subclassing. It also breaks with higher-order functions, e.g. what is the throws clause of a map() method on lists? There's really no good answer in Java, so what people do in practice is

The idea that types are hostile to scripting sounds really weird to me. Turtle[0] in Haskell is absolutely amazing for scripting -- especially if you pair it with Stack (with its shebang support) -- and it is as strongly typed as Haskell. T
