You can write iOS apps without using storyboards or xib files. That's how Apple does it. The main benefit is that you end-up with no merge conflicts in semi-opaque files.

I work in an open space in London. Even if I could setup hypothetically get access to a rooftop like you, I'd be pretty much drenching my laptop and catching a cold. TL;DR: Jealous!

Good timing, because in about 1 hour from now, at 14:00 BST / 13:00 UTC (as if there were such a thing as British Summer), the London Black Cabs will stage a protest that will gridlock London. Not that anyone stuck in London traffic wi

Dash is beautiful because it doesn't get in your way. Very flexible, and even the most convoluted features are quite simple to configure. My only wish is that it would let me use a 'night mode' so I can use white text on dark

alt-shift-enter, go fullscreen, ditch the windows chrome. I don't understand how you would want a Metro UI for vs.net - such a waste of screen real-estate!

I am really intrigued by the obj-c interop capability of swift, namely interactions between blocks and closures / anonymous functions. I can see my AFNetworking code becoming much, much more readable now, without the need to @weakify&#

Here in London, Barclays is about to boot 7k staff from its investment banking division. The writing was already on the wall for contractors, bankers looking for another industry is par for the course.

A C# REPL is welcome indeed, but C# is still too verbose for its own good. The F# REPL is much more useful when exploring dataset.

Indeed, although there are extremes here I feel are quite detrimental. I am not a fan of the "Liquid Lunch" culture I've seen from contractors working for some crown-owned banks who can't pay 200% bonuses this year, nor

I've killed so many devenv.exe in my career that there must be some kind of warrant on my name in Redmond. I agree that vs.net is not really pertinent to the core 'hacker' audience here, but this bug report is actually releva

I run multiple instances of vs.net and don't reboot every week, In my case, I'm cycling through at least 10 instances a day. This bug report is actually interesting (to me).

The ClassID trick is reminiscent of ObjC's KVO addObserver:forKeyPath:options:context: - you typically pass a context to sort-out which type of object you are observing, because the observer only has one entry point for KVO notificatio

Case in point: HMRC (UK Taxman) is about to sell 'anonymized' taxpayer data. With enough 'anonymized' data-dumps and CPU power, at some point, it will become trivial to correlate an ID Card ID with datapoints.

My schedule changed 2 years ago when I had to start working early hours (market openings), rather than the typical late morning till late evenings. I had the hardest time working on the staple dev diet (caffeine + sugars). Switched to low (

The costs tied to bootstraping / prototyping definitely went down in ten years, just by virtue of the technology evolving. There were no cheap github/docker/aws/RoR ten years ago. These tools are catalysts for developer

I was so thrilled the first time I saw Babylon 5's cylinder designed. 2001's toroid design was indeed iconic, but it kind of anchored the idea of what a space station should like for several decades!

This is spot-on. The university I attended offered a MS MFC certification trail ('97), I politely declined after using Borland C++ Buider during my internship. MFC had so much Win32 cruft percolating out of everywhere! I was amazed the

The lead architect of the VCL went-on to work for Microsoft on .Net and most of the venerable (and still working, if not actively maintained) Winforms API is really reminiscent of the VCL, albeit corrupted by the win32 API leaking through.
