Ultimately such a critique implies that the author is an authority figure qualified to give such a critique. It's really hard to see it as anything but self-promotion, especially when done so visibly.

That's more or less how I felt about it as well. Take a guy who's well respected in the community, dish out praise and criticism, establish yourself as the authority figure and pull traffic based off his good name. He certainly has the self

My guess is he either won't respond, or he'll take a hell of a long time figuring out the right way to word a response to this.

Agreed. Not to argue with his accomplishments, but none of his actual coding has been legendary. Sure, he wrote a bingo card creator and a library that has a decent amount of use, but we're not talking Linus Torvalds here. Business wise, th

What evidence do you have that the first kind is ultimately more profitable? The second group of games you listed are some of the most successful games of all time... even Civ can't compare to WoW in profits.

What's wrong with their copycat of Netflix? I was a subscriber for the past few years until recently, and never had a problem. It was actually cheaper than Netflix for me, blu-rays were included for free, and I got 5 in-store trades a month

What kind of books does she read, that she can read 150 in a 9 months And when does she read these books? Good Lord! Unless she reads like Kim Peak... a page in like 2 seconds, then I suppose 150 books is well within reason.

Partly, sure. Also, knowing what happens makes it a different experience. No sense of wonder or mystery, more focus on the prose, storytelling ability, etc.

That is an interesting way to look at it. Didn't Zed Shaw say something very similar in a post a few months back?

I think thats precisely what confidence is. He makes statements that would be arrogant coming from someone less experienced, but since he can back it up, its confidence.

His links from "everyone" and "knew" are both from today... so how would everyone know this already? That said, if they can penetrate the high school crowd, this might be a success. I don't think his mom is really the target market, but I c

That's a pretty simplistic view, no? You don't believe causing a death is different than not preventing other deaths? Or perhaps it is different, but there is a certain moral penalty for letting a person die, and this is less than the moral

I read an interesting paper on this phenomenon years ago (that we use morality to justify, not reason). A summary (not written by me): According to Haidt's (2001) social intuitionist model (SIM), an individual's moral judgment normally ari

Fair enough. I wouldn't mind except reading it so often gives me anxiety about my decisions. This site can be like Cosmo for nerds... I can't stop reading it, but its not uncommon that I walk away feeling 10 pounds fatter.

There are reasons to prefer getting paid in shorter intervals other than not being able to manage money. Why should they get to hold it, earning interest, rather than you? That said, your explanation is probably more often the case.

You don't have to worry about them over-glorifying Google either. The general attitude on this site is that you're either working on your own startup (by far the best option), working for an early-stage startup (ok, but still second best, s

Most users aren't aware that Yahoo is powered by Bing, so the fact that Bing overtook Yahoo in search shows that Bing has gained (or Yahoo has lost) significant ground. This isn't searches powered by Bing, but searches actually on Bing.com.

I'm from the west and I liked NYC at first sight, although I think it'd probably be a bit much for me long term. Boston, though, was fantastic. Now I'm in the bay (still in temp housing, deciding where to live), so we'll see how it goes. On
