Also, I take it you feel the same about Mountain View? Anything closer than San Mateo that you feel has character? I'm working in MV, and I'm not a huge fan of long commutes.

Do you think downtown MV (Castro St, etc) is any better? I actually just moved to the area myself, but haven't found my own apartment yet, so this is quite pertinent for me.

True, but its not that simple. Don't forget about knock-offs. It may be hard to fake an iPhone, but its not too hard to fake clothing, and I can't imagine it will be too hard for a prostitute to fake a "clean" badge to increase her hourly r

You can always say "It happens." I don't really understand your point. "Hey Fred, some $100 bills are missing from my wallet... you haven't seen them, have you? Ya I took em to buy some blow. It happens. Get over it."?

I wouldn't buy a $250 toaster either, but if it actually lasts more than 6 months, that'd be one reason.

Agreed, for the most part. Although when it comes to child day care, there is another factor. Any job dealing with children puts a man at serious risk to any accusation of predatory behavior, and he'll have great difficulty defending himsel

I imagine startups (especially when you're watching your money shrinking every day) can induce desperation, and when you're desperate, working crazy hours seems logical. You feel like the world is closing in around you... you have to do som

I think minor forms of hazing can play an important role in teams. It is important to know how your teammates, coworkers, etc, will react when the shit hits the fan, and artificially inducing a similar situation can be a useful indicator. T

This is true for almost everything. In poor households, the children are generally required to perform more work to help support the household. For example, the cleaning lady at my work brings her son with her to help... can't be more than

There is a lot of truth to this, peers are a strong influence. I do think, however, that things would improve further if the schools were honest as well. At the very least, it'd be one less thing that erodes trust in the government as an au

While this is interesting for a scientific point of view, I really hope these don't become popular in the US. The last thing we need is another "cute" animal that gets over-bred. Visit your local humane society and see how well thats workin

You really think all these people are going to add this to their taxes? As self-employment? And deal with the additional paper-work required? Let me guess, you think people pay the required state tax at the end of the year for all the tax-f

The ideal of the far right, however, is that if you're born poor, you're screwed. You have no right or reason to expect any help at all. Neither extreme sounds terribly pleasant.
