I really don't hate Java at all. It's had a generally beneficial impact in all sorts of places. But I wonder with the change-over in leadership for Android[1] if we aren't seeing signals that Google wants to consolidate all o

Nope. I said what I meant. Java is alot of things. I was talking about all of them. I used to be part of Sun's Java Center.

"That complexity is exactly one of the reasons why it's not easy to write your own baseband implementation. The list of standards that describe just GSM is unimaginably long - and that's only GSM. Now you need to add UMTS, HS

My guess is this gives Google a clear migration path away from Java to a unified Chrome OS for phone, tablet, notebook etc. PNaCl could coexist with Android apps until Google finally phases Java out.

As a former Sun guy, I can say it's because extracting value wasn't something we were very good at or really gave much weight. From Grid to Java to Solaris 10 Zones and ZFS, Jini, RFID we mostly just made cool stuff and then... we

Living in the mountains of Northern California with crappy cell coverage, I hope thinking "offline first" really takes off. Through my day I pretty much only use apps that can "hold it" until we get to another wi-fi or c

That sounds much more interesting. Solving key exchange and message transport in a friendly way, then using a native client has possibilities. I think that's the direction [Hemlis]( https://heml.is/ ) is taking.

I understand the attraction. You want to solve this problem as if it was just a straightforward hack. I spent a few days looking at this same problem (harpomail.com) and abandoned it because, in then end, It seemed like I could only provide

It doesn't work that way. This isn't a Verilog/VHDL implementation, but instead a physical chip. Also he implemented the chip design tool in FORTH as well.

I live in Northern California near Chuck Moore. He came and spoke at our office last week and showed off the new GreenArrays architecture. Afterwards we were trying to come up with things to disrupt with a super low power / massively p

Nice. Did you start with an app and then build out this platform or are you going the other way around? It seems like it would be a great idea to introduce this as a "WOW" app first then sell the SDK. I'm assuming that your p

I agree it's a good way to take responsibility, but I can see it getting out of control if you don't leave people the opportunity to learn. I've had a problem going too far this way and creating a team where, no matter how mu

Insightful article, but it leads right up to the author's blind spot. (It's always easier to see other people's blind spots than my own.) He asks why not more OSS in C#? Then he makes a case for VS == C#, which he defends wel
