I'll add here that more people should date comments in code! Don't know how many of you are collaborating on projects, but It's a personal pet peeve of mine to see something like: // Updated for the new login system ...which of cour

A related note: this is one reason why publishers like ebooks (obviously there are disadvantages for them, too). It's also why I don't like ebooks. I guess I'm a cheapskate. Well over 50% of my personal book consumption comes from used or

Nice problem; I hope to have it someday. First: I echo the previous posters urging you to reconsider the stock market. It's low maintenance and is a nice way to diversify away from your business if you feel it's not sustainable. I just rer

If anyone could point me to similar (iPhone-friendly) references for Objective-C and iPhone development I would be eternally grateful. I've downloaded the PDFs, which a reader like GoodReader does pretty well at, but something like an HTML

I can't agree more strongly here. I elsewhere argue for a website change; this is even a better idea because it'll even more clearly show the difference. And hey--maybe all of us are wrong and the academic minimalist look is more profitab

Good work. For cheap stuff like this, you need to act right away to get data. Thinking doesn't really do anything. I hardly know anything about A/B testing (except what I read here), but I don't think you need to let this test stop you f

regulators need paperwork, and Tarsnap doesn't have it. Well, if this is a pain point for your customers, then perhaps you should consider paperwork? Would also provide additional peace of mind to those not needing paperwork. Sometimes t

I think what people are trying to tell you is that--with all due respect--your opinion on your website is not worth a damn. I mean, if you're interested in pageviews, and revenue--and your comments wrt Balsamiq seem to indicate you are--you

Yes, Mexico is a pretty good description based on the folks I've talked to that have been stationed in Korea in that time period. Hosting the Olympics (1988) apparently really brought some positive change, at least to Seoul. It surprised

The funny thing is, every single one of those participants thought it was worth their time. They looked for something to earn money, and found this. They clearly thought the time/money tradeoff was sufficient. If you can earn a buck doing

Unfortunately, Firefox 3.5 is blocked by the company proxy. 3.0 wasn't, but I guess they're getting wise to those wily engineers trying to use a (arguably) more secure browser. Reminds me of the sites they have blocked under the category

An excellent point. What I find strange is the insistence on cheaping out on the food I see a lot of places. Once you've commited on food, the incremental cost of healthy vs. cheap and crappy isn't all that bad, and keeps the premiums down

I much rather prefer managing names rather than codes/numbers. One major reason is that often in a standardized system, the least significant bits are on the right, and at least in Windows often a longer name will be truncated in a display

Interesting question. When I was the developer, I tried to convince the manager to leave. Bad enough to ruin my own day; I'm not going to ruin his/hers out of vindictiveness if there's nothing they can do.

I feel old. Up until a few years ago I had original, shrinkwrapped Copland (what was to be the new Mac OS, pre-Next acquisition) demo disks. That isn't to say it was working code or anything, it was more of a promo "here's what it's gonna
