For those of you who wish to read more on Erdos personal life I can recommend the book: The Man Who Loved Only Numbers [0]. Highly entertaining. [0]: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/714583.The_Man_Who_Loved...

Interestingly the problem tends to be economical rather than technological. A 5 years ROI would normally be sufficient to get traction. Apparently the current system of charterers is holding it back.

This is Delta which do not have a copy or scan of your passport - just your textual info..., different to customs which do have this. Also note that quality of Delta's photo booth will be much better than a copy of your passport.

This is indeed a great book. Definitely worth a read. Van Reybrouck describes the history of Congo starting pre-colonial, the colonization by Belgium and the entire aftermath. The books gives you a good understanding on the impact and the h

This policy reminds me of a recent TOR blog post [0]. A good example why the tech industry shouldn't ignore the political climate and why the second principle is so important. [0] https://blog.torproject.org/blog/t

Its a flaw in the auction design. A simple rule as the closing time will be extended by x minutes after the last bid would solve this.

Do you think the perception of crime/safety might be an explanation? The difference with three decades ago is the ease of information distribution with social media/internet. Most likely also media coverage has shifted more to cri

True, the suburbs explain some of it. However, I've been told it would be a big no-no to let your 8 year old play in the park a few blocks away without supervision. Parents who do so are apparently considered irresponsible. Do note my

The Dutch have a similar approach albeit at a bit older age. During my last visit to the US I was really astonished when my colleague told me he was driving his kids (12-15 years old) everywhere anytime and that this was common. One of the

That is not true at all, wafer throughput is a factor 4-5 less... The mistake in the first comment is that with self aligned double patterning you only need one litho step, not two. The same applies for SQDP. And since litho is one of the m

To me, you are describing one of the core problems of ad networks. As long as they are not accountable (or simply never have to account) for malware distribution ad blocking will be the best protection...

The example he gives is heartbreaking, however the solution he poses is only treating, in this particular case, symptons of two other issues: Why does it take 2 years to stand trial for a petty crime? Why is the accused sent to prison while

Thanks for sharing! This list is a list I actually expected the OP's list to be. Probably because I'm also more likely to view the Ask HN threads about books.

Even from a theft perspecive it is bad design practise to have this placed outdoor... Why not place only the camera and button outdoor and have a simple wire connection to the wifi module. It's such a design flaw it becomes even funny

I highly doubt your first statement. Solar, for example, is no burden since if you do nothing it would land on earth anyway. For fossil fuels you release chemically stored energy as heat. The same applies for nuclear power. Which is an addi

The math is rather easy, it is however questionable what you define as one of the largest nuclear power plants. Most power plants have multiple units, if you take the power per unit you more or less end up with 20 years. Capacity of large n
