mt19937 (or preferably SFMT¹) is a great library (and fine for cryptographic purposes if you have a sufficiently random entropy source with which to seed it, and reseed it frequently from your entropy source ), but you still have to seed i

I developed most of my hobby projects in C until recently. It's not as rare as you think. C is a good language to think in. Lately I've been switching to Ada, which I actually quite recommend if you like C. Shame it never really c

ATS has had this (via linear types like Rust) for a while, but it's a massive pain to use. Rust's main innovation is gluing together existing ideas with a powerful community backing.

Ada does this with the rather convenient pragma Export(Convention => C, Entity => My_Ada_Function, External_Name => "mypackage_ada_function"); You can kinda coerce D and C++¹ to do the same thing, but this is defin

Do you call Android "just Linux" also? There's a bit more to the OS than just the kernel. I dunno, I think people tend to associate Emacs = GPL, Vim = BSD. Same with GCC vs Clang. Oh and Emacs says ‘GNU Emacs’ all over itself

As long as the FSF controls Emacs, GCC, and coreutils they're definitely doing a little more than shouting. I mean they're ‘GNU’ in GNU/Linux, which is a bit more widespread¹ than any BSD/Linux type thing. ¹Pretty sure A

Sorry, I was referring to the spec for the program, not the spec for the language. And Haskell does actually have a spec[1], but almost everyone uses GHC extensions so I suppose that's kind of moot. 1. https://wiki.haskell.o

Speaking from experience, it's a hell of a lot easier to write buggy C++ than buggy Haskell or Ada (both of which can in some cases be formally verified to follow the spec). C++ is unsafe by default and you have to write lots extra che

That was the case circa 2012 with Clang 3.1 and GCC 4.7, but both have closed the gaps. Clang generates code roughly as fast as GCC and GCC compiles about as fast as Clang.
