We use virtual servers and all of them run different releases of ubuntu and for the life of me I don't understand why they're not running debian. You never start an X session on a server and what admin would want to use Unity anyw

I disagree. Unless you have some trivial C++ project (<100KLOC) you have to buy the plugin from whole tomato for a 1000$ for VS to be at all usable (at least last time I had to use VS - has this changed?). Power tools and a couple of oth

They should also sell a version with no drive. Let's be honest - you don't really need the drive. All the disks have already been dumped for you. If for some reason you still have a disk you want to dump there are other ways to do

> You did the right thing, IMO. Silence is tacitly condoning the status quo. But that is what the author did - he didn't confront the CEO, nor did he name the company.

I'm slightly exasperated with this mythical cultural fit being used as the end all quality you seek in your potential employee. If someone can please spare some time to write a no-nonsense definition so that even an alien could underst

Reading what? Newspapers? This survey is meaningless. At least use the number of books as your measure. Maybe what this shows is that the UK has the fastest readers in the world. On the other hand in my experience readership is rather poor

It depends on the technology model. If the company is using a licensed engine than there's very few coders - 10%-20% would be the number I'd pull out of thin air (probably 5% if you count all the outsourced artists working in swea

Wish I could stay at one company for 7 years. Or at least one city. Grass is greener and all that. I keep my cv updated even when at work, when deciding on tech to use or books to read I often think about how they will fit into my skills po

I think we too often patronise average users. I think it's quite likely that they understand the situation but simply have a different opinion about the privacy/convenience trade-offs. Smacks a bit of "you'd agree with m

There are a lot of programs that already let you do that - look for a firewall and a network logger, there are plenty to choose from. I would be in the running for the main prize then as I use a firewall with a whitelist policy. Everything

The reason behind the deliberately obtuse system of paying is tipping. Unless you change your culture you're not going to solve the problem.

I like to think that often the main difference between cheap and expensive is the amount of QA done so I don't have to do the testing for the manufacturer. Though that's probably very naive on my part.

Have you considered LyX? Designed for people with a problem like yours - wanting the benefit of TeX output without the effort needed to learn something new. It's also a pretty good structure oriented (rather than WYSIWYG) editor.
