I recently got a new job in a Midwestern city and made extensive use of levels.fyi (and Blind) during the process. It helps a ton with setting expectations and understanding what wages and equity to aim for (or a bit above even). There’s a

I generally agree with you here, the sun is shining and we software engineers can make some hay! But...I have words of caution. I grew up in Southeastern Michigan. My dad is a Stanford grad mechanical engineer who worked for a Big 3 auto ma

I dispute this assessment, it’s a drastic simplification and the comparison only starts in 1994, which is after a heavy swing in America to the right throughout the 80s and 90s. If anything, what the article shows is a regression to the lon

56. Sometimes unsolvable questions like “what is my purpose?” and “why should I exist?” lose their force upon lifestyle fixes. In other words, seeing friends regularly and getting enough sleep can go a long way to solving existentialism.

Context for my comment: I am not an academic, my focus here is to share books that helped form my personal philosophy. I am certainly not an expert on philosophy, but I found Frankl's "Man's Search for Meaning" (especial

Oh man, upon looking closer, I now realize you and this thread’s OP are right. That data is really messy. I agree, it’s not a good look.

Ah, the repeated companies had me confused for a moment, too! The list is partitioned by { company, founder } (note the different ownership percentages), which is why some companies appear multiple times.

Disclosure (since Colab is a Google product): I work at Google, but everything I say is my personal opinion and experience. I really dig the overall idea of cloud notebooks. Back when I did fast.ai part 1, I used Paperspace Gradient. It was

Agreed with the above. Harper’s recently ran a pretty good piece on the matter, if anyone is interested in a longer-form skeptical perspective on charter schools and their lack of accountability: https://harpers.org/archive&

+1 from me. I really liked Fast.ai part 1 and can't speak highly enough of it! I plan to do part 2 in the near future once I have a bit more time on my hands. The course is project oriented and quite concrete (focusing on practical

Frankly, I think that implicit assumption by workers is totally fair! The way COL adjustments are done results in a strong incentive to live wherever costs the most. Some time ago I made a comment on this concept that I'll re-post here

Totally fair! Frankly, I only know the distinction from a high school computers teacher who was adamant about the distinction. I guess the easiest way to get the name is to see the “Web” as a “web” of hyper text documents, where hyperlinks

I believe they’re referring to the web as port 80/443 http(s) traffic. It’s the old World Wide Web vs internet distinction, if you will. Email really is just a protocol for message sending, and it lives on it’s own port with its own se

At my employer they withhold taxes from the RSUs themselves as they vest (taxes are withheld at the bonus tax rate using integer multiplication, I believe). E.g.: you'll get Math.floor(x * (1-bonus_tax_rate)) shares and will owe no inc

Does such a rule only apply to SaaS with a contract term? If it applies to all SaaS/subscriptions, I feel that's not an appropriate characterization. There's value in having options. If a company had to wind-down some operati
