Reading this thread, I can only imagine some people saying to themselves: and this is why we don't open source our code. I wonder how many companies keep their source completely closed so as not to have to deal with this kind of PR?

I'm not sure whether it's appropriate to mention this or not, but I was just looking up the authors of that paper to see what they're doing now. Very sadly, I found out that one of the authors, Emil Stefanov, died last year a

Right. In principle, it's possible. Apple maintains it can't read your iMessages, for example. And are there any operations that happen on your photos that have to happen in the cloud? Thumbnail generation/optimisation can ha

For sure, but it could still be better than what publishers currently have, which is basically nothing. Especially for smaller sites. Very few succeed individually on a subscription basis, and micropayments haven't really taken off. I

What's the deal with iCloud Photos and privacy anyway? I've heard talk of "encrypted at rest" but what does this mean in practice? If someone gets root on Apple's servers, can they see my photos, or only if I'm

Interesting that, at the same time, Apple is actively promoting iAds for people to monetize its new news service. On the one hand, if you have to have ads, it's probably better to have an ad platform under your control (where you can e

Maybe it'll be different in Metal-backed El Capitan, but my experience so far has been that the discrete GPU universally degrades my battery life. I'm glad I have it though; sometimes I need it, but it'd be nice if I could ju

I hope so too. I, too, have been a paying Spotify user for a long time and it just drives me crazy. I tried Rdio too but wasn't a fan. All music catalogs being equal, the bar is set pretty low at the moment. I really want to like Spoti

Thanks, but I managed to re-enroll via iTunes Connect instead. Though why a $99 developer program costs £79 in the UK I have no idea, I guess it's VAT. Hopefully I'll finally get an app out to justify it this year!

Thanks, I didn't realise that. Unfortunately, I wasn't looking to charge for my app, so a commercial license isn't feasible for me. As far as I know, GPL3+ is incompatible with the iOS App Store, so that's out too.
