This is a really interesting perspective. It does seem like CSS is "reverse engineered" from expected output rather than the other way around.

I cannot look at a UI design and intuitively know what CSS attributes would generate that exact output. I think part of it for me is that I do not have an intuitive understanding of the box model and how layouts are calculated. On top of th

I got a deal on Comcast to get 1.2Gbps + unlimited bandwidth for $80. I was previously using Century Link Small business at 150Mbps + unlimited. According to their app, I'm consistently using 3-4TB per month. I don't know what the

I love the idea of jq but i use it infrequently enough that I have to search the manual for how to use their syntax to get what I want. Sadly 99% of what I do with jq is “| jq .”

“Huge cable bills” - we’re already back there. Netflix is $23, Apple TV just increased to $10c Disney+ is now $14, Hulu is $20, Max is $16, Paramount is $10, Peacock is $6. You can easily spend $100 /mn on streaming services.

It’s true that space is limited but there’s no reason to believe that we have used up so much of it that there’s no more left and we have to reduce our existing land use. Every human and human created thing on the planet undoubtedly takes u

The TLDR for me: be pragmatic. don’t get caught up in dogma and ideology in search of the “right” answer. Don’t be a “fanboy”. There is no such thing as the “right” or “best” solution because every engineering decision has tradeoffs. You ha

That’s not how I read it “IF you give them more RAM… they’ll just use it”. Thus, more RAM is effectively the same as less RAM. Conclusion: no need for more RAM.

My wife’s computer was getting slow so I stuck another 16GB of RAM in it for like $30. that upgraded added years to its life. I have a stack of old MacBooks I can’t use because they only have 256GB SSDs that can’t be upgraded and I was cons

I supposed if you only used your $1800 MacBook Pro to use the web browser, then yeah, 8GB would be fine.

It’s a weird argument. It’s more weird because Apple isn’t the only computer manufacturer. I’ve never sat in a software development meeting in which the amount of RAM on customer machines was discussed, let alone used as an argument in favo

How? What apps are you using? As soon as I plug in an external monitor it turns into molasses. If I try to do a screen share for a video call, it lags. My memory pressure graph was always maxed out. If I ran the test suite for one repo the

I am no expert. I would guess that the kind that can get added to the same package as the CPU might be specialized enough to have a premium over commodity DRAM. So maybe $30? It’s clear to be that the 8GB isn’t intended to sell in volume. I

You’re arguing that we should all be using 10-20 year old computers and that computers should never get faster because it makes us write less efficient code? That’s an asinine argument.

AMD’s approach is similar to this. The efficiency core is the same core with less cache and lower clocks. It’s not a different micro architecture like in ARM and Intel designs.
