Would it be better to phrase it as "I believe that other people should be able to hear from people they want to" and "I believe that we should stop people from hearing from certain people"?

I respectfully disagree. Internet residents can, quite successfully, remove people from the internet and silence their speech on the internet. Consider Kiwifarms. I am purposefully NOT going to talk about if something is deserved or not.

There appears to be a recent shift on HackerNews no longer support freedom of speech. I don't know that its just HackerNews either - it seems like its 'internet residents no longer support freedom of speech.' I'm not s

You don't see a problem with the culture _because_ you have been there 14 years. If you had a negative impact of the culture, you likely would have left. Survivor bias. There are a significant amount of people who disagree with you (

Cloudflare banned Kiwifarms (this ban is not justified), and Kiwifarms is still running their own servers. Which are ddos'ed by people who don't want others to hear what they say. Some people are thankful that they were able to

The culture of our timeline is based around disliking someone online and bringing real world consequences to them. Whether that is by getting them fired or getting them banned from services its the flavor du jour. To quote the big short -

Re speech - The government typically does not fare well when they try to restrict a persons speech. Re Swatting - because there was no proof. The forums actually had a pretty hard policy about anything that appeared to be swatting related

I feel like we are at the tipping point where the ability to generate scenes/faces/houses/art that can reliably fool human senses becomes commonplace.

I don't know a great way to manage this data issue regarding children and teens besides disallowing them to sign up. But if you give an incentive to a child to sign up with an adult birthdate (actually getting onto the site), I don

For what its worth, I disagree with your statements but you are engaging in good faith and I appreciate the back and forth. Frankly, you are embodying desired HN behavior more than I am. Cheers.

The zeitgeist of the 2020's is about acceptable censorship and the "bad guys" who should be removed from "polite discussion." Everyone is very careful to explain "how the government shouldn't be banning pe

This seems unrealistic. The suggestion is to switch to 25 year contracts for a commodity? With current inflation uncertain and future inflation a pure guess and the consumption rate of these resources unknown in the future, I have no idea

You are in a thread where most folks are celebrating convincing a fire dept to stop protecting a house (while holding matches behind their back). Everyone knows what you are saying is possible but nooone will admit it.
