My impression has been that back end pays more, that's why I was more inclined towards it. I don't think I would pursue my own startup, even though I said so above.

I was interested in IT the most but I wanted to keep my options open with non-IT, like a desk job. A job in marketing, human resources, recruitment...could work but I think you need a college degree for those.

It should have a good support system for you as a programmer (lots of programming related meetup, etc) and lots of other programmers.
