There seems also to be a conveniently available 1998 version[1] which, unlike the version linked in the OP, contains still-working links to several additional chapters.[2-6] I don't know how the content compares to Chaitin's books

Yep! Thanks for the suggestion! Apparently -1 is the same as --fast. See comment below by geocrasher: "gzip --fast. Only 23% slower in speed, but 73% reduction"
