It's hard to get except in the exact situation the original article is talking about. They will give you FIOS pots when they are just trying to get rid of copper. They stopped rolling out fiber because they needed to improve adoption i

Except that Verizon's phone service over fiber is priced and regulated in exactly the same way as their copper service. It is still effectively the same landline service. Forcing Verizon to maintain copper means slower rollout of fiber

Wouldn't make more sense to push employers to move jobs to existing urban areas (Oakland, San Jose, and San Francisco) instead of trying to build more transit to suburbs, and creating even more urban sprawl?

If you are talking about an urban boulevard, then I agree. Engineer the street to lower speeds, and increase safety because there are pragmatic options (roundabouts, speed bumps, more signals and stop signs. But if you are talking about int

If they would read the history, learn the arguments they dismiss reflexively as idiotic, gather even a modicum of context before pontificating, who knows what might happen? This is the main point of the article, and a fair one.

Yes of course, like I've said, the number is overstated, but by how much? How many people in the country live in apartments like you describe? 2%? 5%? 10%? It still doesn't make much of a dent into 97%

You are right, what the report says is that 97% of people live in census tract where there are two broadband providers. What percent have access to the two is unknown, but absent any evidence to the contrary, and given the relatively small

This is not the case for the “last mile”. Consumers often can only buy Internet access from a single provider; there is no choice. This is often asserted, but not true. According to the FCC, 97% of consumers have access to at least 2 bro

That number is only so high because it is discussing 10mbps or higher, so it excludes a big chunk of DSL providers as options. If you lower to 6mbps the numbers stay the same (sadly), but if you lower to 3mbps, 97% have access to 2 or more

The median house price in the US (Jan 2014) was $188k, so it doesn't make sense to say 157k is targeted at the top 10%. The average SS benefit check for a retired worker is 1,298.40. A spouse would add another 652.57. And they'd h
