It may be that psychic powers exist but that they are not powerful, general, or controllable enough to be reliably profitable. Also, if every profitable phenomenon in the world is already developed, then no business should ever invest in fu

When people ask me how to learn Emacs, I point them to your tutorial. It was hugely helpful to me in learning Emacs. Thank you so much for writing it!

Yes, that's a good point and I overstated. Microsoft needs a _few_ software engineers. Most of their developers won't be and shouldn't be, though. Conversely, NASA will have plenty of software systems that have nothing to do

That's a good question. To me, the difference is that when we're writing software and just trying semi-random UX ideas and implementation approaches out, we don't have any real constraints that we're genuinely bounded to

It is. It shows very clearly why most software devs are not engineers. I know I'm not. As a field, we don't "optimize within a solution space bounded by constraints". We throw crap at the wall to see what sticks, hacking

Huh, thanks for the heads-up. IIRC, when I settled on the 25s, they were a slightly better price/GB than the 100s. Maybe that's no longer true (or possibly never was).

My memory is hazy but I think I remember running into an actual memory leak in lighttpd circa 2008. We were serving dynamic content via FastCGI, IIRC. This was a long time ago and I'm pretty hazy on the details, but I'm pretty sur

The C core is getting a feature to compile elisp to native code in the forthcoming Emacs 28. I've yet to try it, but I understand it offers a significant speed boost. It's certainly true that the core C codebase has some major par

I think "intelligence" is a squishy, complex thing, and if I have a specific job to do, I'm going to look for more concrete, trustworthy signals than IQ to see who I want helping me do it.

I've never taken a formal IQ test. I've taken informal ones on the net and came out in the 135 - 140 range, IIRC. I expect I'd do noticeably worse on a real test. I share that as context for the fact that I'm skeptical o
