"Drinkable" and "Tastes like the water tasted where I grew up" are very different things. There is not one flavor of water any more than there is one shade of white. There's no evidence that the water OP refers to

I highly recommend that article as well. Though yes, like you I was left with a sense that this industry is never going to take off, so to speak.

TNs are very easy to 'sponsor', companies far smaller than Amazon do so with no difficulty. My personal recommendation (don't quote me): don't even bring it up until you're well into the process, it's very easy

There aren't going to be a study on there because the most relevant feature is evolutionary adaptation. Going deep on a single topic works great when that topic is in vogue, but leaves you open to disastrous results if that topic lose

I'm hiring a Canadian SW developer (w/ a Canadian CS degree) on a 6-month contract (currently has no right to work in US). Can she generally qualify for a TN visa for contract work?

Sure - now take that situation, and throw into the mix having Google and Facebook 30-mins away and them having the budget to outbid you on anybody they want at any time. That's what Joist management is walking into by moving to SF.

It does sound like they kept most of their engineers, and shed mostly CS staff - which shows a remarkable disdain for those positions. I would be very nervous about working for this company in one of those positions in the future.

I came to the valley in a forced relocation some time ago. In that case, we also lost >50% of the team, including engineering. (I stayed until my green card came through then jumped ship.) It was clear, though, that the VPs and up didn

Using cultural traits to explain specific actions is always a tenuous argument, i agree. I do think that such an action will be treated more kindly by the Canadian press than it would by an American one, though. Let's see.

Uber has a review system, yet lots of stories about low quality drivers. They may be low in overall % of rides but get lots of new coverage overtime somebody has an axe to grind. I think you need to consider this more carefully.
