I think everyone should roll their own distro ;-) The example given is based on Debian Jessie. The hosting forum (vsido.org) is run by a distro based on Debian Sid (experimental).

I like looking at old stuff from Bell Labs and Xerox Parc. If you dig around, you can find some tremendous papers about designing systems. For example, search around for books and papers in the 70's and 80's on Unix, the Alto, Eth

This is only my personal take on things. For me, the internet is like water...you can find it anywhere...especially the library. In one hour at the library I can download all the webpages I need onto a usb stick. Generally, I go 4-5 months
