I dislike the bundling of hardware and software alltogether. In the world of laptops, we have a wonderful situation. I can select the hardware that I like, then wipe the whole disk and install the software I like. Which in my case is a Linu

I have not seen any reports about plain Debian running on the PineTab. Only Mobian, which is not what I am looking for.

Talking about open hardware: Is there a tablet out there which runs Debian or Ubuntu? I don't mean it has to come with Linux in the first place. I can wipe Windows or whatever it comes with and install Debian myself. When I google arou

In the end this whole debate will come down to the question if a new law should be introduced. Something like "learnright", similar to todays "copyright". "learnright" would give the exclusive right to learn fr

How hard would it be to create a "raw" model on a corpus like Hacker News or Wikipedia? With "raw", I mean that it is simply trained to predict the next token and nothing else. Would be fun to play with such a model.

Do you really have to "disable" it to get rid of it? I can't remember when I dabbled with a swap partition for the last time. Now that I saw this post, I ran "swapon -s" on my laptop and on my servers. It comes back

I thought the finance industry is highly regulated? Can a company really "hold any funds in your account for up to 180 days" just willy-nilly? And what does this mean: Fun bonus, they hold $80,000 I won't get back. H

So many questions ... They publish the code to train on your own music, but not the weights of their model? So you cannot just upload this thing to some EC2 instance and start creating your own music, correct? Is this the same as https:&#x

An LLM remembers like a human. Mostly concepts, but some things it remembers verbatim. Why is it a problem if a LLM tells you what it knows? Are LLMs trained on secret data?

I think software was vastly underrated in 2007. Google also more than 10xed since then. Amazon is up 50x or so. Not sure what the other popular software companies were in 2007. Would be interesting to look at their performance. The type of

It is hard to say how many users federeated systems have. Bluesky is an interesting exception as so far there is only one server (bsky.app). According to Similarweb, bsky.app has 5 times more users than truthsocial.com

What makes you visit a Michelin star restaurant? When the first startup I founded took off, I tried some of the more expensive restaurants in my town. I kinda liked the experience. But after a short while, it tapered off and I do not get an

The "context window" is the number of inputs the neural net has, right? Aka the size of the input layer? If so, why call it "context window" and not just "input size" or "number of inputs"?

What LLMs do for me is that they make me a pro in every programming language. "How do I do x in language y" always gives me the knowledge I need. Within seconds, I can continue coding. After more than 10 years of coding fulltime,
