The best thing about CRTs was holding a magnet near the screen to twist the electron beam. Gives you an intuitive understanding of the sideways force experienced in a magnetic field. EDIT: Also, it was heaps of fun!

Liquid oils contain cis double bonds that will isomerize to trans when heated (no H required). Short cooking times will minimise this, or you can use a saturated fat like butter.
