For data structures, an invariant is something that must hold true at the end of all its public APIs. For example a doubly-linked list may have to break invariants around its pointers while in the middle of a splice or insert. But at the en

When I bought a power drill, I didn’t throw out my screwdrivers. There are still cases where I find them essential. They’re all tools, each with their merits and tradeoffs. Few things truly move the Pareto line.

I don’t understand the lack of interest by journalists. What more did Williams need to do the first time he reached out to garner interest? Does ProPublica overestimate the seriousness of the militia movement? I’d think based on J6 the jour

I’d recommend “2,000 Years of Christ's Power” by Nick Needham. I am not sure where it falls on your theology/history spectrum but it has some of both. I enjoyed the audiobook of Volume 1 immensely. For me it did a great job descri

I consider Tracy the state of the art for profiling C++ applications. It’s straightforward to integrate, toggle, gather data, analyze, and respond. It’s also open source, but rivals any product you’d have to pay for: https://git

As per the article, the old domain expired and was picked up by a third party for $20. Said domain was hard-coded into a vast number of networking tools never to be updated again, effectively letting the new domain owner unfettered access i

Photoshop was originally written in Object Pascal, then transpiled to C and then C++. If Apple brings back the Macintosh Toolbox, I’ll get right on porting it back.

Rust is built to be memory- and thread-safe by default. Assuming you follow the prescribed rules of the language, multithreading is “free”. Amdahl’s Law still gets a vote, but at least your app won’t blow up in your face.

This reminds me of the story how the height of Mt. Everest was first measured at exactly 29,000 feet. The surveyor’s boss at the time added two feet thinking no one would trust such an exact number.

Generating Sudokus is a fond area of computing for me. Great job; the website is very thorough and readable. Many years ago I wrote a Sudoku generator in C++ that was based on Knuth’s “dancing links” algorithm. It then analyzed the generate

I would love a website with a 3D breakdown of the Antikythera mechanism that let one peruse it in space, (dis)assemble it, and see how it functions (at least, to be best of our understanding.) Are we far enough along in what we know of it t

For C++ applications, nothing beats Tracy’s flame graphs in value per dollar. We are using it at Adobe with great effect. It can handle mutex lock contention, runtime values and notes, arbitrary value graphs, and more. Highly recommended:

std::deque doesn’t invalidate existing elements when new ones are added to either end of it. It’s not a panacea, and has its own set of tradeoffs, but if non-invalidation is a requirement for you it is available.
