Exactly, it's useful for theft. Taking the value other people produce is the whole benefit of social intelligence. If you can convince someone that a scam is a good deal, you don't need to create any value at all. This is the orig

This is off base. Socially intelligent people occupy all of the best paid and most powerful positions in society. Social manipulation is the most valued kind of intelligence in America, far more than academic intelligence.

There are a few people like that, but not many. And certainly none in the AI space.

That hasn't stopped them before. Fitbit and Nest, for example. Granted, this is an order of magnitude more money to waste. Maybe they'll come up with a better strategy this time.

Google in particular has had some egregiously fake AI demos in the past.

Ah, 90s network security. Happier times. I went and checked myself, and they have evolved a lot more than I remembered. For the better, I think, but you're certainly right that they could be going about this in a more legally adept way

Do you think the open source community is capable of maintaining Firefox without Mozilla? I find that doubtful. Even if they did, without Mozilla, Cloudflare and friends would start trying to kill Firefox like they do to other independent b

This is true of macro life forms, but rinderpest is a bad example. It's one of only two diseases we have ever been able to eliminate. Both of them were viruses-we've never stopped a bacterial disease, and with the increasing failu

You're missing that the LCD is still there. It's still blocking just as much light as it originally did, but now the DLP chip is also blocking light. The effect stacks.

They have gotten better. Recent consumer projectors use triple (RGB) lasers as a light source, which improves color accuracy a lot. It's not worth replacing one that works, but it is noticeable.

I think the dichotomy between how developers have reacted to LLMs (mass adoption) and how authors, illustrators, etc. have reacted (derision, avoidance) demonstrates that coding was never an art to begin with. Code is not an end in itself,

If anyone is wondering, it's ~1 billion dollars per year, for a homeless population of less than 10,000. With this money, they have achieved basically zero change in that number for years. Staggering, incredible levels of waste.

The spec may say it, but I've never encountered a USB-C cable that claims to support 240 watts. I suspect if machines that tried to draw 240W over USB-C were widespread, we would see a lot of melted cables and fires. There are enough o

Answering novel prompts isn't proof of reasoning, only pattern matching. A calculator can answer prompts it's never seen before too. If anything, I would come down on the reasoning side, at least for recent CoT models-but it'

Apple needs China. It's a big market that still manufactures most iPhones, despite their efforts to change that. The surveillance bill the UK has passed is in some ways worse than China's (a UK shard would not satisfy it), and t

The US can get away with this through its immense power and economic influence (for the moment, at least). The UK is a small market of middling relevance, and their government's belief that they're a global power is an anachronism
