My school, Purdue University, has been making a big push towards IBR. The biggest issue with it I can see, is that, as far as I can tell, there's no cap on the money collected. That is to say, if they take 15% of your income, and you e

It was to my understanding that some NP-complete problems - like factorization - are (theoretically) solvable in P time using quantum computing, all within (and indeed as a result of) the constraints of quantum mechanics, perhaps utilizing

Actual question from a software engineering newcomer: What would you consider "business logic" and where would said programs be running?

This may reveal my age/lack thereof, but Europa Universalis 3 is what originally sparked my interest in history and also programming. It's a game that allows you to explore 'what if' scenarios in a fairly historically ac

Clouds are not the disaster that you might think them to be. Yes, they have a fantastically effective greenhouse effect, but they are also very good at reflecting sunlight. I'm not sure about the net result of both phenomena, but that

That... Doesn't seem likely. I've only taken a few geology classes during my undergrad, but considering these are earthquakes in a subduction zone, it doesn't seem possible that some lateral forces would be causing these quak

It's probably assigning a number of possibilities with a confidence rating, and as soon as the confidence rating is > than some percentage of what it's asking you to draw, it says it.

To get the 50,000, I mistakenly, based off another comment, used 200 as the sample size. Your number, 31,250, would be correct (assuming the extrapolation holds) for the actual sample size.

Agreed. But one attempted suicide and one successful suicide in a sample of 320 is not insignificant. This could be an anomaly, sure, but given that the average rate of suicide is 12.93 per 100,000 people [1], and it on average takes 25 att

Either way, assuming the same amount of men end up on this form of birth control as women are on hormonal birth control, there'd be severe consequences. Around 10 million women take the pill regularly, and the male equivalent would res

Last I checked, permanent infertility and a (successful) suicide rate of 1 in 200 are not side effects of female hormonal birth control.

Yep, that's the point I was partially getting at. People often attack Soylent for nebulous reasons, stating that it's 'unnatural' and you'll die if you replace meals with it. However, I do feel confident that at som

What do you mean by unnatural? What is in Soylent that isn't natural ? Food in and of itself is just a mix of different chemicals - be they from plants, animals, or other sources. But at the end of the day, a molecule of glucose from

I believe in the use of Mars as a sort of space-hub. It's better fit for this purpose than Earth, in many ways. It has less atmosphere, allowing for easier launches. Additionally, with around 1/3 the gravity, launches and landings

That makes no difference in the end. The police caused you financial harm, with no restitution. They should be held liable for that under civil law.
